Hello all,
I am a current sophomore in high school taking French. It's nearly time to choose classes for next year, and I'm not sure whether or not to continue in French. I'm already fluent in French and at the highest French language learning level they offer at my school, and if I continue in French I would only be taking French culture/cinema classes that don't really interest me and wouldn't really advance my knowledge of the language. I'm really interested in starting German next year, but a lot of college websites I read say that they like to see 4 years in the same language. I'm a bit conflicted over whether or not I should just take the French culture classes for college apps or do German for fun, so any advice would be appreciated!

If you’re a sophomore and already at that level of French then you’re in a great position. I think colleges appreciate not just proficiency in a language but also a true interest in different cultures and traditions. Take the additional French next year and then you can still take German as a senior for fun. The right colleges will love you for your versatility and curiosity.

I agree with @mondut but I’d say to lean towards the culture classe. Ilove language studies but besides the actual language, i think cultutre’s the best sub-subject. It’d also be good to talk to next year’s teacher just to get a sort of preview. maybe he/she can even give u sample work t see if you’d like it over german. i reccomend doing the same with the german teacher

If by highest level, you mean level IV or above, you’re fine, but I think the culture class would be interesting.Taking German as a Senior, however, would be pointless if you want to continue in college. You won;t learn enough to be placed into German II, so you’d start all over again.

Thanks all of you for your very helpful responses! I think I will go with what you have said and take the French culture classes next year and German as a senior. In regards to @skieurope 's comment, I would be taking the two years in one German class, do you think that would that be advanced enough to count for something in college?

Yes, that should get you placement into German II

Culture classes show a real appreciate for French on a complex level. I’m one of the few seniors at my school still enrolled in a foreign language at the fourth level - and while I can never become verbally fluent in Latin, I loved Roman culture and I wanted to pursue a more nuanced and in depth understanding of Latin language and literature that Latin I and II alone could not provide. I think that colleges would really appreciate the effort in taking the sub-language culture courses in your case.

However - if you decide to drop foreign language altogether, it wouldn’t be that bad - tons of kids get into fantastic schools with only 2 years of a foreign language. You’ll be alright either way.

Good luck!
