$40,000 in loans???

I just checked my unofficial financial aid award and ucsb expects my parents to take out $40,000 in loans when my parents only make $69,000 a year and I have a brother in college also. Do you guys think they made a mistake with my fafsa? Or do they just give out awful aid?

yeah i just l looked too and they aren’t giving me me anything…they seriously expect me to take out 50 grand in loans…
it’s probably because i’m out of state. oh well, guess I can’t go

Yeah im out of state also, this sucks. Unless I randomly become a millionaire I won’t be attending either lol

Awh that sucks. Sorry to hear. How’d you see your unofficial financial aid award?

to see your unofficial award go to ucsb admissions and log on to your application status site. On the left side there’s a link that says unofficial award. Click it and if your award is available there will be a link that says “unofficial award letter”.

LOL DUDE I’m IN STATE AND THEY WANT ME TO TAKE OUT 30GRAND IN LOANS!

Lullies, same with me. 33,000 to be exact.

cupcake something is wrong. Your income shows you qualify at least for a cal grant of $12,000. You should also be ok for pell grant. I would call them. Unless you mean $40.000 over 4 years, than that would be about right. You can bring that down with summer work and watching expenses.

You are all witnessing/experiencing the sad dilemma of being in the middle-class:

You are too rich to receive any financial aid, yet too poor to pay for it all.

The middle class gets shafted when it comes to paying for college. Happened to some of my friends. . .

Why $40K? I thought the cost of attending UCSB was $33K at most, no?

Sadly, I think it’s not a mistake–just awful aid.

How do you check your financial aid from UCSB?

I’m out of state so the total cost to attend Is $55,998. They gave me $16,150 in grants and scholarships and the rest my parents must pay in loans.

they didn’t even give me anything in grants. i knew that the aid was gonna be pretty bad, but i didn’t realize it would be this bad

Only 3% of admits are from out of state. When you concider that thousands of very qualified CA. taxpayers got rejected your offer sounds pretty good.

No mistake. The UC system is subsidized by CA taxpayers, and is primarily aimed at serving CA students. They’ve been admitting more OOS students in recent years but as they make quite clear they’re doing this because of the money OOS students pay. Giving a generous scholarship to an OOS student would defeat that purpose.

I get it now thanks mikemac. I was just thrown off because a couple months ago I did the aid estimator and it said I’d pay around 6,000 not 39,000. I must of done something wrong on the estimator. I guess I’ll just discuss with my parents to see if they can find a way to afford it or not.

^ exactly. the UC schools are california public schools. they are cheap for californians and expensive for out of state, at least for the first couple years. don’t worry, we pay massive amounts of money in property tax to fund these schools—so the california parents have already paid for the schools. you should be able to apply to your own state schools and get similar benefits. but i do understand that the UC schools are desirable to out of state kids as well. good luck. i applied for private schools last year, within california, and my fees would have been 60k per year. thankfully i can go to a UC for free. otherwise i would not be able to complete my education. good luck to all. see you in class!

p.s. calgrant is only for california high school and ged kids.

An alternative would be to go to a cal state. They are around 10 grand cheaper i think.

Cal States are hit by the budget crisis too.
California sucks (sometimes). :’(((((((((

^ for low income people it makes no difference what the tuition is at the UC’s because it will get paid by the Blue and Gold plan. california has the highest ranking public universities in the nation—are you sure it sucks? we are soooooooooo lucky to live and go to school here.

While the UC system is worthwhile for CA residents, its not worth $50K a year IMHO for large classes, lack of personal attention, and the other drawbacks of large publics. You can get a similar education for much less at publics in your state and have tens of thousands left over to finance spending all summer on the beach, or spend that amount at a school offering much more personal attention.

If your parents only make $69K a year, as you say, then have the decency not to force them to tell their child they can’t pay $40K a year for college. No parent wants to hurt their child or shatter their dreams, but there is just no way your folks can pay a total of 3x their annual income for you to get a UCSB degree. Take the high road and don’t even ask.
