40,000 reasons to study that vocabulary

Move over Spelling Bee.

"The National Vocabulary Championship is a new event on the scholastic landscape for high school-aged students. The NVC is an educational initiative conceived by GSN, in partnership with The Princeton Review, to emphasize the importance of language arts skills and encourage high school students to enhance their vocabularies."

I accused a software engineer of being obstreperous the other day. Does that count?

LOL. How young do you look?

Thanks for the info- nice to read it, also refreshing when a midwesterner scores big. I also noted the state Honors Orchestra bit and private school in one of the nicest places in Wisconsin (Madison) to live- good luck to another good kid.

I know this kid. He is a terrific kid. And Wis75 - just a brief correction. He is in the Wisconsin Youth Symphony which is not at all related to the State Honors Orchestra.

You would also have pictured the winner of the competition to be a definite english major and writer in the making, but physics? Wow, now that's a well balanced brain.

This kid also got a perfect score on the SAT last spring and has made it to the national spelling bee. I very bright kid with a very bright future.

Great to see this type of useful word knowledge being promoted. I always thought the spelling bee (at the upper levels) was a waste of time & brain power.

My son was in a similar competition about 10 years ago when he was in 7th grade. The name of it escapes me--it was not the same thing as this competition but of a similar nature.

It is also my understanding that the methodology or skill set that goes into developing/learning words/vocabulary is also transferable to other academic areas.
