My S applied to 9 schools. Our rule was if you honestly can’t say you’d GO there, then you aren’t allowed to apply. He picked 3 safeties, 3 matches, 3 reaches. So far he is 8 for 8, just waiting on USC (which is a reach school). But we know several kids who were turned down by schools for which they were “match,” so you can’t bet on that. 9 seemed like a reasonable number, and they also came back with a wide range of financial aid packages, which matters to us a lot. One I didn’t expect anything from threw a lot of merit aid at my S. Another from which we expected good aid was really stingy. You just never know!

My husband’s parents and grandparents are USC alums, but this year I honestly don’t think being a legacy matters much at all. In the old days, it helped. 45,000 applicants this year, for 2,900 spots. Yikes.

I think that is a great rule SJR…, If you don’t see yourself happy attending the school, don’t apply (my D applied to 7 schools). We had our D visit all the schools prior to applying and she elimiated one school through her visits. She originally was only going to apply to three schools, but we felt she needed some other options. She’s 2 for 2 so far on her top three, so what do parents know anyway.

32 ACT, 4.0 GPA, 150+ hours of volunteering at a hospital in the pediatrics department, went to very competitive program at CHLA (partner with Keck School of Medicine), president of Latin Club, on Student Council, work summers since freshman year at preschool as a swim teacher, National Hispanic scholar. Generally, they give half tuition scholarships to NHRP scholars, which is why I applied.

Have about the same stats as you, just not as much volunteer work. It’s going to stink when i don’t get in, as i was rejected from my 1st choice, and waitlisted from my 3rd. USC is my last hope for my reach schools.

The USC admissions blog was updated with a new post today and we have actual stats for this year:

“We received nearly 46,000 applications from first-year students, 24% more than last year. We offered fall admission to about 8,400 students, and we expect roughly 2,650 students will accept our offer. The average GPA of the 8,400 is higher than 3.8 on an unweighted scale. The middle-50% SAT range is 2060-2250, and the middle-50% ACT range is 30-34. Students come from all 50 states, over 70 different countries, and from all walks of life. And lots of them really like sushi.”

Hey, I like sushi! :D

Does being in state help at USC?

^^no. It’s not a public university.

Wow! That’s an 18% acceptance rate. Good luck to all those anxiously waiting and remember to post in the stats only thread (you can give as little info as you want)!

I don’t like sushi…f***

My twins applied to 3 UC schools each USC , Stanford. Did not let them apply to a state safty school. If they did not work hard enough to get into a “good” school they can shelp themseves over to the CC for two years When Stanford turned them down that was their early admit choice, I started to worrry. S got into USC and all UC’s he applied to. His sister accepted at 2 UC’s and waited listed at one. I breathed a sigh of relief. Now wait for D’s notice from USC. On line option would be nice. To those that say the envelope is what it is all about; don’t check online but let those of us that want to …

All 50 states eh? I’m in Alaska :D
