49% acceptance rate this year?

ive come across some threads where people posted that this yr ucsd admitted about 49% of the applicants. That is kind of high, considering last year’s admit rate was like 39%?

Im just curious what happened; why the sudden surge of acceptances?

I'm not sure what's going on either. Might have something to do with the new SAT. I know UCLA's acceptace rate went up also, which doesn't make sense. (If more kids "passed" their point systems or whatever the crazies use, why wouldn't they just take the top tier like always?) Not complaining however, because I'm very likely a product of such an aberration.

UCI's went up to 60% from low 50%s and Davis did too. So something happened system-wide.

There was an article about this...but they said all the UCs except Berkeley and LA (who took less than ever) took more applicants than usual due to Merced's grand opening

UCSD
2006: (GPA) of 4.03 and an average SAT Reasoning score of 627, 664 and 636 respectively for Critical Reading, Math and Writing. (So 1291 if it was the old SAT)
Total Applied: 43,579
Total Accepted: 21,305

2005: (GPA) of 4.05 and an average composite Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT 1) score of 1314.
Total Applied: 40,514
Total Accepted: 17,787

Total Accepted: 12,094

2005: (GPA) of 4.25 and an average composite Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT 1) score of 1347.

I think all of that is right. I might add more UCs later.

Thanks. would be interesting to see the other UCs. I wonder if they over-accepted. I know that even with the increase in % admitted, UCI saw over 100% increase in appeals from just a few years ago.

"There was an article about this...but they said all the UCs except Berkeley and LA (who took less than ever) took more applicants than usual due to Merced's grand opening"

wouldnt it be the opposite? due to merced's recent opening, all UCs would take slightly less people so more ppl can feed into merced and equal things out. maybe?

This article from UCLA's student paper pretty much explains why admit rates have gone up. Hope this trend continues. Good news for CA residents.

they did receive a significantly higher amount of applicants this year. a friend told me something about 1988 or something having the most babies born lol. but all the uc acceptance rates went up. i wonder what it'll be like in the future.

I'm very confused by the inverse effects of Merced opening :{
