4th year UC student - I completely forgot to renew my FASFA by March 2nd, am I screwed?

Hi guys,

So this will be my 2nd year at a UC (4th year, but I transferred). So basically, I completely forgot that FASFA renewal was due by March 2nd and I just submitted it today. Thankfully, it accepts applications until next year for the 2017 - 2018 academic year…

However, the issue is with CalGrant. CalGrant website says that as long as I have received CalGrant before (which I did for the last academic year), I don’t need to do anything else… but to renew the FASFA!

People are saying that if you miss the 3/2 deadline for CalGrant, you are screwed… but I can only find cases about first-year students. How about for previous recipients, is it the same or do I have some slim chance of still receiving my awards?

A little panicked right now, so any info is appreciated

Contact your school…and the Calgrant folks. Really…I can’t imagine anyone here can give you an answer.

That FAFSA was available for completion and submission in October 2016. You missed the deadline. And you had months to get it done.

Contact the school and Calgrant folks to find out the implications of missing that deadline…maybe for a returning student…it’s different.

As I understand it, if you missed that March 2 deadline, then even as a returning student, you are out of luck on the Cal Grant. But call financial aid at your uni to be sure.

With financial aid of all types, but especially that in the state of CA, you REALLY need to be on time. And early is better. If you plan to go to school again next year, I’d ask you to put a note on your schedule NOW for next October, to complete the FAFSA as soon as it becomes available.

THIS October…that’s when the fafsa for 2018-2019 will be available.

If you can’t get the aid you need, and you can’t afford to go, then ask for a leave of absence and then apply for aid for the following year.
