I know the text book "Organic Chemistry" 6th edition by John McMurry is used. Does anyone know if the 5th edition is very similar? Thanks!

Isn't this course supposed to be easier than 5.111?

yeah but the problem is that you need 5.111 to take 5.12=(

That sucks. :(

5.12 isn't supposed to be easier than 5.111. I found 5.111 to be really easy, although that may have something to do with the fact that I'd taken AP chem in high school, and 5.111 only does a few extra topics beyond the AP exam. 5.12 isn't difficult per se, but it is a whole lot of annoying memorization, which I find more difficult than learning concepts such as those taught in 5.111.

The material in the two classes isn't very related, and I could see how (with a little extra work) it would be possible to learn 5.12 without having taken 5.111, but why would you want to? If you're going to go to the trouble of learning organic chemistry, don't you want to know some general chemistry first?

Oh, and I don't generally use the textbook, because lectures tend to be more useful and go more in depth than the book. Learning ochem from a textbook just sounds painful too.
