I posted something similar on the Bowdoin forum, but the College Board says there are about 1,700 undergrads at Amherst / 4 = 425. My admit letter said there were 7,700 applicants which translates to a 5.5% acceptance rate?! Crazy!

They accept many more than end up going, I'm sure the acceptance rate will be in the double digits....

Whoops...wasn't taking into account the yield hehe. Never mind!

People always make this mistake. So about 8000 students applied to Amherst, and about 2000 were accepted (not 425). Amherst and all other colleges must accept MORE students than those that ACTUALLY matriculate, because not all students will go to their school.

I hope that made sense, I'm not good at explaining things very well : )

Based on the yield (38%) and the 425 number, the acceptance rate is around 15%-16%. Equation: [(425)/(0.38)]/[7700]

On my rejection letter Amherst specifically stated that they received 7,700 for a class size of about 440 so you do the math. libellusgirl is correct on the whole yield business

I got an early write, and the adcom who emailed me said the admit rate was 12%.

even so...wow.

According to US NEWS & WORLD REPORT, Amherst's rate was 19%

jennycraig, that data is not for this year. Harvard for example, had a 7% acceptance rate this year, but that site has it listed at 9%. I don't think Amherst has released its statistics yet.

The DoA emailed me; it was 12.5.

That means that they overenroll by about 45%...
