Hey there! I’m currently a junior year in HS and am taking quite a few AP classes. For my junior year, I’m on track to take:
AP Language & Composition
AP Calculus AB
AP Computer Science
AP Biology
AP Physics I
US History I CP
I’m not a great fan of history and don’t generally do well in it. Hence, I picked CP. The subject doesn’t interest me as much as math and science hence I decided to take it simply to fulfill graduation requirements. I have finished French IV my freshman year and took AP French my sophomore year, so foreign language is out of the way. Personally, I think I can handle the rigor and I will be able to do really well this year! However, I’m still not completely clear on what AP classes are like as I have taken only one before. What do you guys think about the rigor? Is it manageable?
Thanks in advance!
P.S.
I will be taking the following classes my senior year:
AP Literature & Composition
AP Calculus BC
AP Statistics <— AP Psychology instead?
AP Chemistry
US History II CP <— I have the option to take Dual Enrollment at a local college/AP US History?
2 electives of choice that I haven’t picked yet
It’s completely dependent on the student, and we don’t know your ability to succeed with a rigorous workload. Your school counselor, teachers, and parents would have the best input. If you think you can handle it, that’s a good start. You should know yourself better than we do.
Fwiw, my D is taking about the same schedule (Chem and BC instead of Bio and AB), so I’m confident it’s a schedule that can be handled by a talented, well-prepared student (she’s has 3 previous APs), but that doesn’t automatically extend to others. Her older sister couldn’t have managed with that schedule.
I’m a sophomore in high school and I am taking 4 AP classes. They are: AP Environmental Science, AP Computer Science Principles, AP US Government and Politics, and AP Seminar. It is not as much work as expected and I do most of my work at school so I have plenty of free time at home to hang out with my friends and do all the things that students with no AP classes can do.
With all due respect, CSP/ES/Seminar likely has a different work profile than Lang/Bio/Calc.
Have you taken honors bio and honors chem already?
Since you’ve only taken one AP before, perhaps drop AP CS and save it for senior year. Is it CS principles or CS A?
If you havent taken honors bio or honors chem take that instead of ap bio, otherwise stick with AP bio.
I have already taken Honors Bio and Honors Chem. I am taking AP CS A.
Ok, then drop AP CS A, and keep it for senior year. Going from 1 AP (in a subject you already know well) to 4 difficult AP’s is enough challenge in a year. Remember that most public universities will only see your GPA till the end of junior year so you really, really don’t want to tank it by taking on more than you can handle. In addition, it shows increasing difficulty for your schedule, rather than an overload junior year and an easier class (AP Stats) senior year.
My suggestion:
JUNIOR YEAR
AP Language & Composition
AP Calculus AB
AP Biology
AP Physics I
US History I CP
CS or Robotics or another technology elective
SENIOR YEAR
AP Literature & Composition
AP Calculus BC
AP CS A
AP Chemistry
US History II CP
1 elective
How about AP Psychology in the open slot (last item on the list) for junior year?
Why do you want to take ap psychology?
I plan to go into Neuroscience/Neurology. Psychology would be a complimenting class for that reason.
When AP Psychology says to you , “That scarf sets off your eyes,” it is a complimenting class. The word you want is “complementary.”
Oof, that’s right. AP Psychology would be a complementing class. Lol.
