5 Best and Worst Things About SLU

I'm accepted and have to decide! It's coming down to the wire! Would love to know what you think are the 5 best and worst things about St. Lawrence (and also whether you are a student, parent, alum...) Thank you!

Bump!
(This board is so quiet.)

Parent of an entering student:

Cons:

 1. Bad weather;
 2. Difficulty in getting to from most places;
 3. Expensive;
 4. Not as well known as some other LACs; and
 5. Not as diverse as it could be.

Pros:

 1. Students are generally friendly, smart, close-knit, happy and engaged;
 2. Nice facilities, including a great new science building, student center, art center and gym.
 3. Very strong and loyal alumni network;
 4. Close proximity to incredible natural beauty and a 2 hour drive to one of North America’s best cities in Montreal:
 5. Small classes with well regarded professors and a dynamic President.

Kiltdad or any other alumni student or parent … anything new to add for pro’s and con’s? As a new parent to SLU (so was accepted ED), I just want to know more, but for those still deciding these discussions are always interesting.

Snowflake-does your student still like the school? And how do ED students learn about their decisions? FedX, UPS, USPO?

Snowflake doesn’t post much anymore, but we chat a few times a year because our boys are both at SLU. Her S is a year ahead of mine. Both of our boys re extremely happy at SLU. I literally cannot say enough good stuff about it. I think kilt dad’s list is still pretty accurate. I would also add amazing dorms and fantastic dining hall with really good food. I think it always comes in tops on dining hall food categories. My S is a very outdoorsy type, so he loves the North Country. He skis, rock climbs, ice climbs etc. He is never at a loss for things to do. He grew up in So Cal so that says a lot about the place. It is cold, for sure. But not as remote as people like to think. It is part of the charm of the school, and they really embrace it 100%. Anyway, my S did not apply ED, so not sure on your question in regards to that. Let me know if you need any other questions answered. My S is a Philosophy major/Pre-med.

Thanks for answering for me, 5boys!

Son just graduated and he loved SLU every semester. I just wrote a longer summary in another SLU thread.

If your student doesn’t like doing what everyone else does, has some specific interests (my son was a music and outdoorsy type) and a curiosity to learn, then they will enjoy a place like SLU that allows them to grow, see the world, and meet really interesting people from many walks of life.
