5 Classes a Semester: Impossible?!

@FutureVPFinanace
I think you’ll be able to get into Econ (unfortunately, with Salanie) on the first day. If the past semester is any indication though, people will drop the class or switch sections, so keep at it, and you might make Musatti.

You can register at any of those times on the list, but really, if you wait any longer than the first day, good luck getting into the popular intro classes.

My daughter is feeling a bit nervous about her schedule, so might not take the logic course. Do you think that this is a tolerable schedule for 1st semester at CC?

Two of the Lit Hum/UW/Frontiers, depending on what fits
Calc. II (could take Calc. III, but probably will ease into it by taking II)
Gym
Spanish (whatever level she tests into, possibly 3rd year)
Intro. to Logic

Thanks!

StatBeast1- Is Calc 2 required for your daughter? I heard it’s harder than 3 and very boring. Econ doesn’t require it so I’m just gonna go straight to 3.

Saob12- I think I would rather wait for Gulati in January. Econ is my first choice major and CULPA definitely gives the message of avoiding Musatti and Salanie like the plague.

Calc II is mostly like doing a lot of antiderivatives and learning techniques for them - I loved doing that in high school, but it’s really not necessary for most people. If your daughter took Calc BC she will probably find it repetitive, I think.

Gonna try my best to get into gym… I didn’t think my specialty (volleyball) would be very popular but apparently it’s enough to fill up the class.

Yes, it was my experience that Calc. II was harder than Calc. III. Her planned major will want the Calc. I, II, III sequence, maybe even Calc. IV (luckily she does not have to really declare a major until next year…) - she is thinking of one of Math or Math-Stat or Stat (along with some creative writing courses), but who knows. I changed my major about three times when I was in school (though I’m guessing this is harder to get away with in CC, as there is pressure to finish in 4 years - I went to an inexpensive state school).
As far as gym, she wants to take Yoga which she has practiced for awhile, but that one may be filled already.
When are you all thinking of taking the swim test? Right when you get to CC?

Oh, and she got a 4 on the Calc BC test but a 5 subscore on the AB part (and A’s in Calc AB/Calc BC) so she can either take Calc. II or Calc. III, but the Bulletin says that it recommends Calc. II in this circumstance.

statbeast1 - how do you figure out what courses are “needed” for the planned major? You had mentioned " Her planned major will want the Calc. I, II, III sequence, maybe even Calc. IV "

You are planning on 6 courses - is it not too much for the first semester? Heard, most people take 5 courses in the first semester.

Also heard most people take Gym only in the sophomore year or the second semester onwards. Is this true?

All the gym classes ate already filled.

I looked at the list of gym classes (yep, virtually all are filled, I’ll bet they’ll all be by the time Freshmen can register). However, it looks like a bunch are overfilled (for instance, the first section of basketball has 26/22) - how does that work? Are the extra students waitlisted?

@abscalc Math requires four sections of calc (or else the Honors math sequence):

as does the Math-Stats major. I can’t tell if the Stats major requires it (they may be prerequisites for some of the stats courses, but they are not all listed as required for the major).

What is the procedure to register for the classes at the scheduled appointment time on Aug 31?
Does one talk to the adviser and then register after a one on one meeting or is it done online for the entire group at that assigned time?
Is this the initial appointment time to “discuss” or does the “actual registration” happen at that assigned time?
