Essays: Pretty good, original. Former admissions officer friend read my common app essay and really liked it.

Chances?

Thanks!

TBH, I’m not too optimistic about your chances at HYC&UPenn, the SAT-I&II scores are a bit low, especially for an Asian applicant, and while your EC’s are strong, I’m not too sure they’ll save you. Then again, if your essays are as good as you say, you may very well get in, at the Ivies, it’s a crapshoot.

Strong chances/10 at the other schools though.

If you are applying to MIT you need to take either Math Level I or II.

Yes, I took the SAT Math II and am waiting for my results tomorrow. (Ahh!)

I’ve been wondering about this: Does it look like my school has grade deflation? I don’t think so, because it’s an IB school and the classes are honestly very hard, but what does it look like?

Harvard (SCEA), Yale, Columbia, UPenn, MIT, Johns Hopkins: Reach

Carnegie Mellon, NYU, Tufts: Solid chances

Don’t know much about other colleges.

Good luck to you!

Johns Hopkins is a reach? I thought it was a match! Who knows, maybe my research will help there

Just found out I got a 740 on the SAT 2 Math II. Ughhh. It’s a looong story. Should I even bother to apply to MIT?

You are a STEM female so it will boost your chances.
Apply to MIT, 0% chance if you don’t apply.

“Johns Hopkins is a reach?”
Strange, isn’t it?

I had VERY HIGH NUMBERS and I was very surprised when I was waitlisted from JHU.

Good luck to you. You will get into some great colleges.

STEM female, didn’t think about that.

“0% chance if you don’t apply.”
That’s basically why I’m applying - its’ my one chance, I should take it

Oh, I really really like Johns Hopkins. I really really hope I get in.
@20more = That’s scary that you didn’t get in.
I applied to Biomedical Engineering, so its that much more unlikely. I could possibly get into JHU but not into BME though.

Harvard (SCEA), Yale, Columbia, UPenn, MIT - Reach

Cornell, JHU - low reach

CMU - computer science - no, others yeas.

Tufts - syndrome

You should make it in others.

For CMU, I’m not applying Computer science, but probably information technology.
Am I really a candidate for Tufts syndrome? I feel like my scores are too low for that.
@20more - Also, thank you for the last sentence of your post. That made a kinda crappy day feel a lot better

What about?

Georgetown, Bucknell (5 year business and engineering), Boston College

@texaspg - My mom doesn’t want me to apply far away. Carnegie Mellon is a big enough stretch. Do I have a chance at Chicago? I would apply if it made sense, but if it is just as competitive as the Ivies, I don’t want another “pointless” reach

If you are in northeast, why aren’t you applying a bit further away where you will stand better chances? Rice, USC, Notre Dame, Duke, Chicago etc.

I would say in at At least one ivy

shameless bump!

stressed out bump!
Also, I got into Drexel.

Are you asking for FA?

No, I’m not asking for FA.

If you get into Harvard or get waitlisted, you probably have good chances at others.

I missed your answer about distance. Your mother may just need a longer umbilical cord. Colleges look for diversity of students. So you stand a better chance at higher ranked schools further away from home than closer to home. So Duke, Chicago Northwestern, Rice and USC might prefer you compared to schools that are all in NE.

Might look at Holy Cross and Lehigh.

MIT and most Ivies expect 750+ on subject tests and SATI Math, especially if you are going for engineering/comp sci (I assume you are). For that reason I feel all of those schools are reaches or low reaches.

BUT you are a female which close to doubles your chances (i read somewhere that twice as many guys apply for engineering as girls)

SO all the ivies (and CMU SCS) would be high matches (I say 40% chance maximum). I think you’ll make it into JHU as well as every other university I didn’t mention :D.
