5 students arrested in Drug bust @ Columbia university

Make that “a non Greek student.” According to the Spectator, 4 out of 5 belong to frats.

I love how a lot of people have this idea that only stupid kids do drugs. I’m upset that these kids are going to have a criminal record, and for what? Have they hurt anyone? No, they were doing something to themselves, the government has no right to say what people can and cannot do to themselves.

Respectfully, carmelita, one could argue that “taking” drugs does not hurt anyone (other than the user), but “selling” drugs funnels money into larger organizations that hurt thousands of people. Even though I have taken drugs, I am not going to think for even a second that I didn’t hurt my family, my friends, and had the potential to devastate those I love if things had gone wrong with an innocent trip.
If you think this is not hurting anyone, then stroll through the rough streets of your closest city at night and admit to yourself that these five individuals are doing exactly what those scary boys on the sidewalks are doing…they are just doing it in a nicer neighborhood.

To anyone saying that Columbia has bad students: do you think they’re the only smart college kids involved with drugs?
It’s sad that this happens though, their intelligence has basically gone to waste.

At the elite private boys’ prep school in my former city, the boys formed a buying cartel. Every month a different boy would make the drug buy and distribute to the members of the cartel. There was MUCH more drug selling and use than at the public high school. When I expressed my surprise to my son, he said “Who do you think has the money?”

“…selling” drugs funnels money into larger organizations that hurt thousands of people."

Hey I buy GE light bulbs, I’m funneling money into an organization that produces weapons (I think) that hurt thousands of people. I funnel money to the Annheuser Busch company et al. And if I wanted I could buy cigarettes and funnel money into Philip Morris. Those large organizations hurt thousands of people. I can’t control all that. But I can make an informed decision about the extent I am willing to have them harm me, if I have the facts.

The main difference is because they are legal I won’t go to jail for it, whereas these kids might. For whatever sense that makes.
