At state universities (Binghamton, Stony Brook, Albany, Buffalo) you can get a under grad and masters degree in teaching in 5 years. I am wondering if anyone has any experience with these programs/how to get into them/ are they worth etc. Pretty much any knowledge that can be offered would be appreciated thank you!
Typically for 5 year programs you apply your junior year once you are in the correlating undergrad program. If you get in, you will start your grad courses your second semester of your senior year and stay an extra year at the school as a full time student.
For some people its worth it, if you know you want a masters in education its worth i . My school has a five year but I am not interested because I don’t want my degree in education.
Do keep in mind that in New York State you need a masters degree within 5 years of receieveing your certification
The people that I have spoken to have differing viewpoints one common one being that sometimes it is better to wait to get the masters because if you have a masters right out of college, districts may not want to hire you because you automatically start off on a higher pay scale than those who are applying with just a bachelor .
