5 Years in School - Co Op vs MEng

My point was also that some students pretty accurately know where their interests lie even before graduating and working somewhere. I don’t think your blanket statement is nearly as broadly applicable as it implies.

Plus, we shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that this student is in the situation he is in because he is ahead, but can’t graduate early. Further tech background in the same amount of time is a bonus without much downside, regardless of future path. Fractionating his education to include business at this point could indeed have negative consequences though.

What if a kid is going for Industrial Engineering which has business components and wants to go eventually into management? What if they know that side of engineering is what truly interests them but wants to learn the engineering side also ? How is having a business minor or entrepreneur minor hurt them? What if the school is a top school in this field… This is coming from a learning novice. Thx

IE is a different kettle of fish, very systems oriented, and really the exception to the rule about business classes in undergrad. The OP isn’t an IE though.

Some business topics are also covered in IE courses.

My dh was IE and did a 5 year program for his MBA. It was perfect for him and he had multiple job offers to choose from. As stated above, IE has a different focus than most of the other engineering disciplines.

Thanks for your comments. My son is entering his second year at Michigan for IOE and also is on track to graduate early like in 3.5 years. So he will look into doing a minor and or bs/ms 5 year track and or trying to fit Study Abroad in. Maybe an MBA if he doesn’t do a bs/ms . He will get all this information this upcoming year to help sort it out. I didn’t realize that IE was that different in this respect. This really helps clarify somethings.

Good luck to the OP

@Knowsstuff . My son did a study abroad in New Zealand while getting his Mech Eng degree. It was a great experience so if that is an option, your son might consider it.He took his engineering classes there so did not lose any time.

@lakemom Thx so much. I know he’s looked at Technion in Israel but this year will be the “information year” for him. They also have co-ops etc and why this thread was of interest to me.

@Knowsstuff, it’s far enough off topic from the OP’s situation, that you would be better served by starting a new thread. It might bring more IEs into the discussion.
