5 Years Master's Program?

I had heard anecdotally that Stanford offered a Masters program in which you could pursue under-graduate studies while pursuing a masters. Does anyone know if this has any truth to it?

Not quite sure it's that simple, but the 'coterminal degree' gives students the option of starting their graduate curriculum during the end of their undergrad (either Junior or senior, can't remember) so you may save a year or so overall but I don't know how much.

Its a pretty attractive option (especially for transfers) but from what I hear its very competitive and not just a given. You have to be accepted for it.

It is pretty simple, actually. You have to apply for it in your junior year. It is not "given", but the acceptance is pretty much determined by your GPA, so you'll have a good idea whether you'll get in ahead of time. Once you are accepted, all the upper level classes that don't have to count towards undergraduate degree can count towards MA.

So how much is that, nngmm? How much of your M(B)A can you complete during the undergrad and save overall?

"How much of your M(B)A can you complete during the undergrad and save overall?"

I don't think the program applies to MBA degrees through Stanford's business school.

How much MA you can complete would greatly depend on your major. Some major (like CS and other engineering majors) require more credits than others. It would also depend on how many credits you had coming in. (Stanford used to be very generous with AP credits till 5 years ago, so you could easily have a full year of credits coming in (so some people could finish MA within 4 years), but now it's harder.) It also depends on how much you can handle. Anything between 12 and 21 credits per quarter is considered "full load", but, obviously, taking more classes will get you farther along.

I don't think you can do MBA as a coterm though (or any other professional degree for that matter)

The vast majority of Stanford MA's require 45 units, so that's one year of courses. Coterms just get a head start so they don't have to take as many units per quarter. Grad students have to take at least 3 quarters of 8 units each, so I guess you could potentially "save" up to 21 units during undergrad.

Thank you so much for the information. Hope to see you all soon at AW or in the Fall.

If it's very important to you, check the Stanford bulletin for the majors your are thinking about, because there are a couple of departments that don't offer co-terminal degrees (Poli Sci is one of them, I think.)

Is the coterminal possible with a double major? I doubt so but you never know...

It should be, as long as you follow all the rules.

Right now, I'm thinking History and they do offer it, so I'm good. Although, I think I'll also try to fulfill my premed requirements while I'm at it. I really can't decide between the two fields.

undisclosed, what were you thinking of majoring and coterming in? If your coterm subject is the same as one of your major subjects, that should probably work. What you might end up doing is majoring in only one of them, then coterming in the other. Plenty of people major in one subject and coterm in something else, usually a related field (like math and CS, symsys and a related field, physics and engineering, etc.).

Hi!

I wanted a double major in communications + creative writing (hush. It's a personal thing, haha) and then an accelerated MBA.

Another possibility would be: double major of communications + economics, hoping the combination would give me opportunities similar to the MBA on the market.

Is double major and a minor (no coterm) a possibility?

Why doesn't Stanford have an undergrad business school? :(

Wow! that's ambitious. good luck. I'm content with my coterm and premed req's.

Wow! that's ambitious. good luck. I'm content with my coterm and premed req's. hopefully!

Yeah, I think I might not be the type for an MBA/grad school.

After 4 years I'd like to get on the job market for a few years (Maybe return to the MBA later if I choose to).

Few questions:

A) Is the double major + minor thing possible?

B) Hypothetically speaking can someone do as many minor as they want? As in going beyond the four years...

C) Does an undergraduate in economics open similar work opportunities to a business undergrad?

Thanks in advance, :)

I know at least one person who did double major in econ & math in the honors program in 3 years. I am sure he could have done a minor or two if he chose to stay another year.

No one in the "real world" seems to care about minors, so it would be kind of a pointless thing to do. I heard that grad schools sometimes frown upon minors, because it makes you look unfocused.

Thanks! :) The minor is really just my own achievement ('creative writing').

So i guess that depending on the answer to C) I'll decide whether or not an accelerated MBA is the best path...

I am absolutely sure that you'll do very well w/r/t job opportunities with a major in econ from Stanford.
