5 years of science vs 4 years of foreign language?

I'm a senior trying to schedule my classes for next year, but since I attend a very small school, there is only one spanish 4 class and it conflicts with AP Stats. So I'll be missing out on my fourth year of language, but I'm picking up anatomy/physiology instead, so I'll be taking that and chemistry in the same year. I'm planning on majoring in psychology. Will the extra science make up for the lack of foreign language?

No, but there are only a handful of super-selective colleges that recommend 4 years. If you’re not applying to them, it won’t matter.

https://www.asdk12.org/depts/world_lang/program/HS/University_WLReq.pdf

@skieurope I’m applying to Claremont McKenna, which is on that list :/

Why do you want to take AP Stats? I would assume that a psych major would have to take stats in college? Will they require you to take more–or different–stats classes? I think you would derive more long term benefit in terms of retention and fluency from more time with the language.

@consolation My only options for math next year are AP stats and pre-cal. Should I take pre-cal instead? I figured the AP would look better, but I could take Spanish 4 honors…

I think you would have a better foundation with pre-calc and Spanish honors. Especially if you end up needing to take calculus in college.

I agree to take pre-calc and Spanish honors. The pre-calc will help you out with calculus while the Spanish will help you potentially test out of college courses.

Okay, thank you!

Only 3 years are REQUIRED it says 4 years are recommend which means you don’t have to take another year.

CMC gives no credit for AP Statistics and you can place out of the foreign language requirement with a 650 on the SAT subject test. You’re better served doing pre-calc and Spanish next year.

@tola2015 I’m the type to cover all my bases though, so if it’s recommended I’m going to do everything I can to take the class.

The top schools like to see you take up to Level IV in a language and as high as you can go in math, AP or not. Pre-calc will actually prove more useful than AP Stats - without pre-calc, you’d be considered a remedial math student at a place like CMC, which may mean they won’t admit you. You need to be ready to take calc, as you don’t declare a major going into a LAC, they expect you to be ready to take any path.

Yes^^Just another voice to agree with the advice to take precalc and Spanish 4. For such a competitive school you don’t want to be weak in your core classes and not having precalc is weak. I’m sure most applicants will have calc. So that is more important than AP stats, which you can view as an elective. It would have been okay if you had already had precalc. Continuing the mastery in Spanish is worth it and showing that you are pushing on in another core area. I totally agree with your attitude on the recommended courses, katiebug. But if you can’t because of something else important when you have a strong schedule, then that’s another story.

Another vote for Spanish 4 & Pre-Calc

If there’s an honors options for pre-calc, that would be helpful as well.

I’ll plan on switching then! Thank you all! And there is no honors for pre-cal. Honestly I’m just hoping that one of the two periods they offer a pre-cal class will line up.
