50 black people at middlebury

Midd apparently has a 2% black population, so that's like 50 people over four grades. Vermont itself is only 1% black. I live in a predominantly white area now but it's probably 55% white, 20% asian, and 20% black, and 5% hispanic. I'm used to being the only black kid in a classroom and I get along with all races (my social group is probably 70% white) but 2% seems like very few black people to me. Are there any major race problems at Middlebury for african americans? I've seen this joke.
Today, black students attending Middlebury College were asked if they felt in any way isolated while attending school there. both said "No."

I just feel like it may be a little strange to almost have no other black people around. Mostly for dumb little reasons like not being able to find hairstylists or dermatologist who specialize in african american hair and skin care, but also reasons like not wanting to be the token black girl for four years. Does anyone know if they themselves or people they know feel isolated being black at Middlebury?

The class of 2015 had 31 African Americans (about 5% of the class) and that number is only increasing

I’m a black student here at Middlebury and I can honestly say it depends on every one’s individual perspective as to whether or not we feel isolation is a problem. To me, I love everything Middlebury has to offer and never feel uncomfortable for being a black student. I have friends of all races and sexes and am still close to many members of the black community. That being said, there are definitely some black students here who feel Middlebury is seriously lacking on its diversity initiative, and there are changes that have come about including adding a new POSSE group from Chichago, composed of students of traditionally minority backgrounds. There is also a large African population who get counted in with the international students. Overall, Middlebury is a great school with a lot to offer as long as you don’t confine your self to dwelling on the lack of racial diversity, as you’ll find diversity in many other ways.

I’m black and going to Midd this fall if that consoles you in any way. While you seek out an accommodating hair stylist, I’ll be looking for a barber who can shape me up properly…

All the best! I hope you choose Middlebury. :)
