5000 Applications!!!?!?!

according to Matt's latest blog post, they received about 5000 applications for EA. So will they stick to their ~500 EA acceptance trend from previous years, (10%), or will they accept more than usual due to the large number of applicants? I'm freaking out here!!!

I say they will stick to 500, maybe go a bit over.

Well 500 was already about 150 more than they usually accepted so if they go over I doubt they'd go more than about 550. However, I do think there will be a lot more deferred.

MIT doesn't arbitrarily accept a certain number of students -- they accept a number which they project will give them 1100 accepted students who enroll in May.

Last year they accepted 522 students EA, which was considerably more than they had accepted in previous years, because of changes in their peer schools' early action policies which made them project that fewer admits would enroll. Their projection was pretty good last year, and nothing major has changed at MIT's peer schools this year, so I would expect them to accept about the same number of students EA this year as they did last year.

The number of applications has no effect on the number of spots available at MIT. The number of spots available is dependent primarily on the number of dorm rooms available.

I'm going to build myself a dorm--can I get into MIT?

...and secondarily on other stuff.

I wrote a blog entry on this topic almost exactly three years ago (here). The question comes up every year around this time.

There were around 600 applications from QuestBridge from which they have already taken 6. Does that mean rest have been moved to RD or will those be considered as part of the EA? If these are not part of EA then the application number reduced to 4400.

I'm not into becoming Didi of anyone also.

But to clarify the questbridge non match applicants do have a choice to consider for EA so the number of applications still stand at 5000.

MIT mentioned that decisions will be online only: does that mean no tubes? !!!!!

^ that's what I was wondering. I hope not :(

this post-switching thing is really getting annoying...
