529 plan, merit, and my EFC

@mom2collegekids‌ forgive me, but who funds grad school?

It can depend on the field of study whether and how well grad school is funded. Generally through TA or RA work. Talking grad school here, not professional school like med, law, vet, pharm schools.

Actually, this should be cleared up:

Is the D interested in a PhD in STEM, social sciences, or humanities? Because STEM and some social science PhDs are funded by the universities themselves (as PhD candidates are essentially cheap labor as RA’s and TA’s in those fields). Most humanities PhD’s are not funded by most universities.

If UK is at the top of the list I would suggest that your D really prepare for the PSAT because they give a full ride for Mational Merit It includes the lowest meal plan and cheapest dorm so sometimes people upgrade and pay but still a very good scholarship.

@purpletitan at this point she is looking at a double chemistry/ psychology major with a PhD in neuropsychology She would like be a psychiatrist but does not want to go to med school so she’s decided on psychology

@ahsmuoh she is aware of the scholarship to National Merit Scholars and takes the PSAT in the fall. She has started prepping. What is a good score for that?

KY is not historically a state that requires a super high PSAT to qualify, looks like recent years ranged from 208 to 212. You can see numbers in many threads in the NM forum.

Are you in Ohio? The cutoffs for Ohio have ranged between 211-215 the last few years. See this thread:

Jealous! My son got 214, but there is no chance for him in our state, where last year the cutoff was 219. Ah well.

But yes, Kentucky is very generous to National Merit Finalists. My daughter is a NMF and almost went there, but decided to stay closer to home  .

oops, sorry about that, I had KY in the head and forgot your state of residency was OH.
