54 with 16A and 16B

Hey guys I took 16A-16B my freshman year. I'm going into my senior year right now, and I want to take more math (for econ grad school). I remember how to differentiate and integrate, but thats it (I forgot all about Taylor series/polynomials). However, I did not do that well in the 16 series (C+ and B), but I was kind of a different student back then...let's just say I goofed off a lot. Would this put me at a huge disadvantage for 53 and 54?

If so, I will probably just do 1A-1B to prep, or maybe just jump into 1B. I hear that class is merciless though, and I really want to do very well (like, an A)

You’ll be competing against math, physics and engineering majors in 53 and 54.

If you struggled in 16AB, the 5X series will be very tough for you. I don’t mean to sound discouraging. The best thing to do now is to build up a solid calculus foundation via 1A/1B.

yes. the sixteen series is not made to prepare you for 53/54 whereas 1a/1b is.

What about 1B with 16A and 16B, instead of 1A?

1B should be fine for 54, but you should be comfortable with differentiation.
53 is more reliant on material from 1A though.
I think econ grad schools require both 53 and 54, and the econ classes here use 53 more (the prereq for econ 101A is math 53)

i dont wanna be a downer or nethin but if ure goin into ure senior year not having even taken the bare minimum (53/54) i wouldnt waste time applying to grad school for econ. adcoms want to see math 104 stat 134 econ 104/103 econ 141 etc. all the math intensive courses. seein that ure 16a/b grades werent too good even with work ethic its a tough road id suggest doin an mba or get a public pol. masters its less quantitative

Yeah, believe me I’ve thought about all you mentioned, i know they love analysis, but I’m not there yet. That’s why I want to take more math to get ready for grad school; I’m not applying this fall…I’ll probably take another year to solidify my math training by taking math classes somewhere. And I have no illusions; I’m not getting into a top PhD program, I’m trying to get a Masters and kick ass in it. I took the soft econ route early on and only recently did I realize it wasn’t optimal for what I want to do.

What about 1B with 16A and 16B, instead of 1A?

What about 1B with 16A and 16B, instead of 1A?

You need to start at the beginning with 1A.
