Hey guys, I was wondering in the midst of a time crunch what my best option would be. I’ve been accepted to Butler, Purdue, Taylor, and IU but haven’t applied to BSU yet. I want to go for biochemistry on a premed track and get out of school with as little debt as possible (at Butler it’s a pharmD track). I should have 75 AP credits at BSU when I graduate and was wondering if all of those would be transferable and if I’d be able to graduate in 2 years or less and go to IU med school. I want to get out of my undergrad with little to no debt, any advice?
Its extremely difficult to graduate in 2 years on a premed track. You would likely need about 3 years to fulfill all the prerequisites. I suppose there are ways you might be able to do it in 2 years, but it depends on how much of a rush youre in, and what credits you get for your ap classes (which varies by institution as im sure you already know).
You need to check the college as to what AP credit is transferable, and for what courses. Note that many medical schools do not accept AP credit for pre-med requirements, so you would have to take additional more advanced courses if you skip the introductory level courses (e.g. if you college lets you skip a general chemistry course with AP credit, you need to take an additional more advanced chemistry course if you actually do skip a general chemistry course with AP credit).
I think you can’t ignore that it will seem to make you a less attractive candidate.
Med schools only consider Calculus to transfer, everything else has to be taken at a college. If you took many dual-enrollment classes, it’s different from AP, but graduating in 2 years will not allow you to have a depth of experience in research, internships, and shadowing that you’ll need and will significantly lower your odds of admission (in addition, age would likely be a concern to med schools.) You’d be better served using your credits to take as many advanced classes as you can and perhaps double major.
