5th grade math question.

Xavier spent 3/10 of his money on a lawn mower, and 2/3 of the remainder on a barbecue grill. If he paid $336 for the barbecue grill, how much did he pay for the lawn mower?

I solved it and I’m pretty sure I’m correct, but I’m being told I’m wrong. Could someone please solve it and prove me right (or wrong ) :slight_smile:

I got $216

^^^^THANK YOU! SAME! Lol, no one believes that’s the answer but at least now I’m self assured. Thanks

This can be solved by cross multiplying.
We want to find out the whole value of that remainder, not just 2/3 of it, so cross multiply.

336 - (2/3)
X - (3/3 or 1)

That leads you to 504, which is the remainder of that previous purchase. 3/10 went to the grill, 7/10 remained! Cross multiply again.

504 - 7/10
X - 3/10

You come out with 216 . Hope that helped!

Yes, I got 216 as well.

This is College Confidential, not a homework help site. Why don’t you ask one of your classmates?

@basedchem calm down damn it’s not a big deal

Wait I got 240 haha im dumb

@ErenYeager it’s $216.

Funny thing is, I almost put $240 except it took me awhile to realize that 3/10 is not equal to 1/3.
