5th Year Engineering Masters (SGUS)

UMich has a program called SGUS which allows students to complete a masters degree by just staying an additional year. Does anyone here know anything about getting into the program? I am currently an IOE major and might want to pursue an IOE masters. I have a pretty low overall gpa right now but my IOE gpa is high. They say the minimum requirement when you apply is 3.5 but they allow students to petition that if you have other special accomplishments. If I had an overall gpa of 3.3 or 3.4 but an IOE gpa of 3.7 when I applied, do you think I would be admitted into the program?

Sounds like a good reason to petition. I mean, regardless of waht anyone tells you here, you should still contact whoever you need to at Umich and follow up on it. If this is really what you want to do that is

you don’t have to be in SGUS to get your masters in 1 year.

Unless you transfer 15 credits (which is the maximum - at least in IOE), it’s easier to do it with SGUS than without though. To do the whole degree you have to do minimum 15 credits/semester to do it in one year, and realistically more than that because of how the credits are structured.
