6 Figure EFC???

lower my costs to under $30k per year<<<

Oh, are your parents going to pay for most of that? If not, how would you pay it? You can only borrow $7500 per year. Your parents would have to qualify and cosign for you to borrow more.

Are you or are your parents paying for all these apps? Seriously, you’re wasting a lot of money unless your parents are going to pay.

I don’t think you understand how aid works. And I don’t think you understand how merit works for transfers.

PSU doesn’t give merit scholarships to transfers. the cost would be $50k for you. VT probably doesn’t give merit either for OOS transfers.

Doesn’t look like GT gives merit to OOS transfers.

Isn’t PTK awards only about $8000 per year from rutgers? Do you qualify for Stats II

The COA for Rutgers is about $31k per year. How much would you get in merit??

Can you commute to Rutgers or NJIT

Carnegie Mellon is a waste of time in terms of aid. Our EFC is similar but CM wants us to pay over $50K and I think part of the package was loans. I don’t think VT is any better than Rutgers but depends on your major. GA Tech has a very high penalty for being out of state BUT their co-op program would allow you to earn a large amount of money working in your field and building a great resume.

Penn state is 37k per year including room and meals
I don’t qualify for NJ stars 2
Rutgers is only 11k per year and 12k per year for room
I can potentially commute to NJIT but I don’t really want to. The commute to Rutgers is even farther.

PSU is $44,000 This year. Next year will be higher. do they have dorms for transfer students?

Tuition and fees 31,350
Room and Board 10,920
Books 1,769

How would you pay for this?

Rutgers is about 27,500 for this year. Each year will be higher

Tuition and fees 14,131
Room and Board 12,050
Books 1,350

How much will you get in merit from RU? How will you pay the rest?

I was a national merit scholar and I went to Rutgers. The Honors Program was a great experience and I got a full ride to a top flight graduate program thereafter. Look a little deeper and you might be pleasantly surprised.

I would not be in University Park at PSU so my tuition would be substantially lower. Rutgers gives 1750 - 3500 per yr in merit. In addition to an 8,000 PTK scholorship that is 10k a year right there. The rest will have to be payed by part time work and by my parents. I have 6k in the bank right now and will be earning more over the spring/summer.

why would you choose a satellite PSU over Rutgers???

Nothing is set in stone yet. I will make my decision based on the answers I receive about the financial aid and then I will sit down and review each school and how much they would cost me. All the schools have different versions of the degree I am going for and some of them have a more interesting curriculum than others. If Rutgers had an amazing degree program and lots of internship opportunities I would not hesitate to go there.

Is the $8000 PTK scholarship guaranteed, or is that a competitive scholarship? Is that $8000 a year, or is it spread over 4 years? Is every single member of PTK GUARANTEED $8000 a year at Rutgers (or anywhere)?

^^^

It’s for 50 PTK awards and it’s for 2 years (since it’s a transfer award). It’s only for NJ CC transfers. Don’t know if they get more than 50 PTK NJ transfers each year.

Anyway, I’m bothered by the OP’s implication that Rutgers is filled with students who are “below” the OP. As a STEM major, your classmates in your major at any school will be very smart. Rutgers is a nationally well-respected university.

While I understand the “not the university in my backyard” mentality, the OP needs to deal with the limitations of his situation. He has said that his high EFC parents won’t pay much. He can only borrow 7500 for each year. He can contribute a few thousand each year from savings and earnings.

OP…what were your high school stats?

Information Tech or similar

Secondly, I went to CC with the intention of transferring to a school with better academics and smarter students than Rutgers. Not to bash on Rutgers, but a 3.9 GPA should get me to a better school.

You’re missing the point. You may get into a “better school,” but unless you have misled us with your comments that your parents won’t pay much, you won’t be able to PAY FOR that better school.

You think the caliber of student at James Madison or a satellite campus of PSU is higher than Rutgers???

Well the PSU satellite campuses cost about $13-14k for just tuition for instate students, so I imagine they will cost more for OOS. Also you will have to figure in rent, utilities for 12 months somewhere.

It would not be cheaper than Rutgers.

If you are interested in Cyber security there are programs where you can get scholarships in exchange for working for the government for a few years.

Excellent point! The smartest kids in VA typically go to three OTHER VA schools.

This just goes to show that many NJ kids just have wild-haired misguided thoughts about Rutgers.

What is it about Rutgers that so many NJ kids don’t want to go there? I’ve never seen this attitude, to this extent, about a well-ranked flagship. I don’t see many PA kids on CC saying such things about PSU, I don’t see many OH kids saying such things about tOSU, and so forth.

Rutgers isn’t UN-R, so why this crazy attitude?

For the vast majority of HS kids in PA, Penn State is not within commuting range. Penn State is “away” if you live in Philadelphia. Since NJ is both dense and small, New Brunswick feels close, both geographically and mentally.

I think it’s nuts. I hire for a living and Rutgers has an excellent reputation among employers. The idea of a kid in NJ paying out of state rates to go to James Madison with the idea that it’s a higher caliber intellectual experience is crazy (no disrespect to James Madison- but it’s not where the top kids in Virginia go).

Where do you think the other high GPA students whose families can’t/won’t pay for them to go OOS end up? Places like Rutgers.

I don’t understand why the New Jersey kids diss Rutgers, just as I don’t understand why NYU is considered so desirable (especially considering NYU’s lousy finaid reputation). OP, you need to reconsider your attitude that your 3.9 gpa makes you deserve “better” schools. Concentrate of finding out what your parents can pay. Just how much did they say they would help you? How much did they help you with cc?

Concentrate on getting your degree, then when you have a job you can live wherever you want.

There are a lot of people on the west coast who see Rutgers as a destination. It’s typical NIMBY not in my backyard.
