6 year BS/MD programs info

Hi,
I am a current high school sophomore, but I have started looking into 6 year BS/MD programs, because I am definitely sure that I want to be a doctor. If anyone who is currently in a 6 year program or is looking into applying at one has any info on what I should be doing to increase my chances of getting into one of these programs, I would be extremely thankful. ^_^ The UMKC program sounds very good, but I also want to know about other 6 year programs as well. Any info would be welcome. Thanks!

this also has bs/md programs

After an afternoon of college research I only found four:

 1. Howard University and something else
 2. UMKC (deadline is OCTOBER 1st), apply FAST and early
 3. Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOM), deadline Dec.?
 4. Penn-Jefferson Premedical Medical Program (November 30)

yeah… that’s pretty much the only extant ones.

thanks coldasice and globaldreamer
are you guys current high school students applying for college or do u attend one of these combined programs? i am currently a sophomore, so I won’t be applying for a couple more years, but I was wondering I should be doing right now to increase my chances of getting into one of these combined programs. I know they’re very competitive and I just want to be prepared.
are you guys from GA by chance? if u are, have u heard of the GAMES program at middle georgia college?
thanks for the help you two! ^_^

You should have good grades and test scores (ACT/SAT), and different experiences like a job, volunteering (community service and clinical setting), clubs, sports, and/or whatever else you like. Also try to have some sort of leadership, and try to get strong letters of recommendation from people that can attest to these activities. Look up the programs on the individual websites and see what they require. You could also check out the combined degree (I think that’s what it’s called) forum and see if that’s any help.

I would really try to get in a lot of MED related EC’s

 • good luck !

true that. Well or you could be really angular.
I don’t think I did much medically?
I wrote non-typical essays and i got an interview?
::shrug::

are you guys currently in a combined program right now? and thanks for the help nate763. i have good grades and will have good test scores, but i don’t have many MED related EC’s as of now. i also need the leadership that you talked about. i have done a lot of research on this topic, but it is kinda hard to narrow down the programs that are 6 year and good at the same time. i also live in georgia, so which one of the programs do you think is the closest to georgia?

also, if you guys are currently in a combined program, do you think it is better than the traditional route. i would really like to do it in 6 years, but if i had to i wouldn’t mind doing 8. there’s always emory here for med school…^_^

globaldreamer: what do u mean by nontypical essays? and how was your interview? how long ago were you in the process of applying to these programs?

Well for the 6 year programs especially, it’s nice to have some sort of medical background, whether that is volunteering a hospital or nursing home or getting some hands on experience in a lab. The best way to get more information is to talk to either your family doctor or a personal friend who’s a doctor to get more info on what’s going on in the community that you can help out with. Another thing to consider is volunteering for the Red Cross.

*It’s not necessary to do all of this, but it will definitely help.

Volunteering for the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, or United way (among others) will never hurt your application.
