70% females?

I keep hearing that JMU is 70% female, but I recently saw that it's actually 60/40. Can anyone who goes to/went to JMU verify how obnoxious the female to male ratio actually feels? I'm wary of going to a college where I feel completely surrounded by females.

70% is a rumor - its actually closer to 60%. But still, there were lots of guys on campus, and to be honest, the whole 60/40 ratio was not very noticeable. I didn’t really take it into account when I visited and I am definitely not concerned about it now.

I guess its only really noticeable on a sunny day, when all of the girls are laid out on the quad in their bikinis…

With 18000+ students there is hardly a discernible difference. Guys and Girls all over the place LOL!

The most recent Common Data Set for JMU shows a total of 9,905 female undergrads out of a total undergraduate population of 16,459. That’s about 60% female, not 70%.

The freshman class has 70% females and 30% males; however, the overall percentage of females is 60%.

^^^^

Not true. The common data set shows the freshman class (defined as degree-seeking, first time students during the 2009-2010 year) as 63 percent of students.

I do like how a young woman clarified what the difference really means to her as written up in the New York Times. Paraphrasing her comments:

If my class has 40 percent guys, only 50 percent of those I would ever consider dating material. Then half of those guys are taken. That means that effectively the majority of the females in my school are after 10 percent of the class. Sorry ladies, if she is correct … that’s tough.
