I got a 70 on my first midterm, and the class average was an 82. The lowest midterm gets dropped. A lot of kids got in the 90s and some got below 50, so I think that is how the average became 82. The class is divided into lab as well, and I have an A in lab… should I worried? Can I still get an A in the class?
You need to look at the class syllabus and grading material you got at the beginning of the semester to try to figure that out. You haven’t given enough info here for anyone to help you.
Grading:
You will be graded according to a fixed point scale. There are no curves, there is no reason to compete with your colleagues, and you might all get A’s if the grades are high! The point values for the course components are:
LABORATORY … 100 points
QUIZZES … 45 points
HOMEWORK … 20 points
PTES … 15 points
EXAM 1 … 70 points
EXAM 2 … 70 points
FINAL EXAM … 80 points
TOTAL … 400 points
The grading scheme will be:
370-400 … A
350-369 … A-
330-349 … B+
305-329 … B
285-304 … B-
265-284 … C+
240-264 … C
220-239 … C-
200-219 … D
< 200 … F
I have 79.28 out of 80 points in lab as of now (20 points [20%] of my lab grade will be decided by a final lab test. One of the lab TAs tried to scare us by saying that the average for that test was a 50, but he disappeared after the first lab and I don’t know the validity of that statement. I have 15 out of 15 points in PTEs and 19.5 or 20 points out of 20 points for homework. I have 36 out of 45 points for quizzes as of now, and I got 49 points on my first midterm. I was really depressed about that score, because I know that I am better than that. It was my last midterm and I had a midterm the day before, and maybe I was exhausted… I know I’m making excuses
If you get a better grade on your second midterm than you first midterm, than the grade of your first midterm is replaced by the grade of your second midterm, but this surely means that the second midterm is extremely difficult! Either way I’m going to study for the next midterm as much as I studied for my Biology midterm, where I received a grade that I was satisfied with. I don’t usually like to fiddle around with numbers but any insight will help!
