NO…
@whatisyourquest The OP mentioned wanting to major in Econ. Applying to Caltech for econ would be silly, as the number of courses offered is very small and the “major” is designed to be only a 2nd major to go with some STEM major. I don’t know of any other college where a 780 in Math (regular SAT or subject tests) would be an issue. No need to retake.
^ Fair enough, about Caltech and Economics. Here’s a better example:
MIT has a very strong economics program. Number 1 in this ranking:
But 780 on the Math Level 2 Subject Test is at the 25% percentile for MIT admits:

I agree with the other posters that 780 is perfectly fine for the vast majority of universities, but there are a few where it is not so hot. Circumspection is not a bad thing! It is important to know where the OP plans to apply, but that hasn’t been disclosed.
@whatisyourquest Caltech is a pure STEM school, so they will ask for higher Math II scores.
I thought we were talking about Ivy League all along.
^ Where did the OP mention Ivy League? I don’t see it.
As I demonstrated in #22, MIT is great in Economics (and Architecture, Linguistics, Philosophy …) and a 780 on the Math Level 2 is pretty low for admits there.
Yes, you mentioned MIT; the original poster, however, did not.
^ MIT is not Ivy League. And I only brought up MIT as an illustration that 780 is not universally a good score. Great for many, but not for all. It only takes one example to invalidate blanket statements, and I provided a very good one. The OP didn’t mention any target universities; if he/she did, it would be possible to definitely answer the posted question.
@whatisyourquest Ivies, probably going to ED Penn
You should be satisfied with a 780, even for top universities.
@Saranyaa What did you get in Spanish?
I would not worry about a 780 at any school, even MIT or Caltech. If you don’t get in, it won’t be for that reason.
keep in mind colleges don’t care when you took a test. Just because you took it as a junior will not give you an advantage.
I took it as a senior and I’m well aware of that but thank you @kjake2000
