790 SAT II Math

Should I retake if I got a 790? I feel like I'm capable of an 800, and that's what I got on all the practice tests. I'm aiming for top-tier UC's or Ivy's and I'm really not sure

I would retake it. The Math 2 is HEAVILY weighted, meaning you can get around 5 wrong and still get an 800. So you probably got 7 raw scale score points off and you just need to get one or maybe 2 more questions right and you’d have it. You’re so close anyway, and most applicants that send that test to Ivies get 800’s, bc it’s the most weighted subject test.On the Math 2 anyone who doesn’t get an 800 could get looked down upon at the Ivies.

Do not re-take. Top schools know that there is no difference between a 790 and an 800. One student does not know how to do two problem and guesses. He gets an 800. Another student is a genius and whips through the test, but makes one bubbling error - 790. The great colleges will look at other indicia to verify what you can do.

If you take it again and they see 790 and then 800, they will know that you do not understand the details of the testing limitations and that you might be a score whore. It won’t hurt you much, but they may opt for a more interesting kid.

^WRONG. He/she doesn’t understand the weighting. According to collegeboard 11% of students who take that test get an 800. If you get a 790 it puts you at the 85th%, which for an Ivy, is not good.

The 50th percentile on the Math Level 1 is a 600
On the Math Level 2 its a 680.
This shows the weighting, Math Level 2 is way harder than Level 1 but the scores are much higher.

I wouldn’t. The 10 points is not a make-or-break thing. Retaking a 790 makes you look anal and too in need of external praise/reward. Score an 800 on your SAT and leave it at that.

No. 790 is amazing.

790 is far from amazing on the math 2.

A 790 is amazing on almost every single test, Math 2 is not one of them, along with many of the language ones, particularly Chinese and Korean.

i got 770… should I retake then?

I got a 780 on math on the SAT I

Should I still retake?

I got less than 650 on Math Level 2 and I got into an Ivy. I was not spectacular in any way, at least not like some amazing kids I’ve seen who were rejected/waitlisted.

Even if an 800 is 5 wrong, the difference between a 790 and an 800 is one question. I’m pretty sure 2 questions away from an 800 is a 780, so no don’t retake the 790. There’s almost no difference between a 790 and an 800. I got an 790 on Math II and I did okay :P

Dude…don’t be such a noob. Just keep the score. MIT says that as long as the math level 2 score is above 750 they don’t care whether it’s 760 or 800.

WHat?!! Don’t settle for number 2 man! 790 is careless and inconsistent… It’s funny, you’re willing to settle for that score? C’mon!

I don’t think a college would reject you based on whether you got a 790 or 800. I got a 790 on the Math 2 test and I think I’m okay. There is so much more to a college application than one subject test score that the difference won’t matter.

@burgerking

Sure a college won’t reject you for a 790, but considering how competitive it is you want to give them every reason to ADMIT you.

If you’re taking another subject test later, retake this one on that day. If not, I’d say you’re okay.
