7th grade SAT scoring question. Would like advice please?

Hi, my daughter recently took the SAT for the first time in December. She was trying to go to Duke Tip camp, and we were quite surprised when she scored a 2140. She did not study at all.

My question is - do you think there is any reason to ask to save this score? Particularly since no one has seen the new SAT. I feel like she will likely do even better in the future w studying,

Any opinions are welcome

I’d save it because it may qualify her for other GT opportunities before she takes it again as a high schooler.

Thank you. I didn’t even think of that. I know she qualifies for SET but didn’t consider other opportunities. You may be right.

Is it true that you can only sit for the test five times ?

And you are asking why again? Just not really certain what you are asking.
What do you you mean by save? What were you hoping to get from posting? Were you going to call the SATs and ask them to throw out the score?

Since she is in seventh grade and took the test through a talent search- the score disappears if we don’t ask to have it saved. (I believe I have to pay to save it). I am wondering if there is any benefit to saving this score. It’s obviously high for a seventh grader. Is this something she would want to put on Applications to summer or other programs?

You have to pay to save it? How is that possible?

SAT scores taken before ninth grade aren’t permanent. I have no idea why.

You don’t have to have to ask College Board to keep it to provide it to g&t or summer programs. They will generally take a copy of your paper result. My D2 had a similar score, didn’t have them keep it. Your D might be a good candidate for the Davidson THINK summer program. My D did it for 2 years and loved it.

Thank you. That does look really good- hard choice between that and Duke tip.

It is more selective than TIP – she would meet more students like herself. But she could do TIP for a couple years, too, if you want her closer to home for now. My kid did THINK after 9th & 10th grade.

That’s an extremely high score for 7th grade. Impressive. But yeah, she’ll have to take it again for college, for sure.

Thank you intparent- I looked at it briefly and it seemed they didn’t require a certain SAT score. Think it would do her good to spend some time with kids at her intellectual level. We will take her anywhere.

If you don’t mind me asking- what became of your daughter? Did she do exceptionally well on future tests?

DS is in 7th and got a 780 in math. We are not saving the score. I doubt it will happen but I was concerned that in 11th when he takes it again it would not be too great if he scored lower than he did in 7th…

That is incredible yearstogo- yeah, I think we will not save the score as well. Initially I was worried about the same thing but it’s seems kind of unlikely that they’ll have worse scores four years from now

I also think it is unlikely but I have seen many instances of kids doing really well until about 11th grade and then various bad things happening…I do not see the upside of keeping the score. We will have the official papers so if we need the support we can provide it.

By the way, my son did a Duke TIP one day session and we were not overly impressed. Probably the summer camp is better…good luck

Thank you. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. I hope you are wrong lol as we are extremely picky. Our reason for trying Duke Tip this summer is that my daughter attended the one week Crisis camp last summer and it was wonderful. Very bright kids, excellent staff, and since she chose journalism - the kids visited a news station and met everyone who worked there. They also attended a live taping. They made their own radio show, and worked together on interviewing kids in other programs, and writing news articles. There seemed to be a great balance of education and fun. The science programs seemed even better.

This summer she will attend for three weeks. You have to score higher to get into the Center so we are crossing our fingers that these will be the brightest kids.

Congrats to her, i guess we will be seeing you in grand ceramony, my kid took the ACT route but similar result are expected Finger crossed

Both girls went to Duke TiP center summer camps and really liked them. D15 will be a 4th year this year (her last year). D17’s 4th year was last year.

If you’re looking for a rigorous academic atmosphere, this isn’t it. The kids all have a blast socializing and doing fun things and making great friends, but it’s not academically competitive and nobody is planning on putting it on their college applications.

In my opinion, the value of the camp is to bond with kids who think as fast and as differently as they do-ie “keep up” intellectually-they’re all pretty bright, so that playing field is leveled. It also gives them a teeny little taste of what college might be like, and that’s been a good motivator for them-they totally didn’t believe us that college is any different than high school until they went.

I’ve heard very good things about Davidson, if you kid can get in (the requirements are much higher than Duke TiP’s). And I think it is free, as opposed to TiP’s hefty pricetag.

I would save the scores, because why not?

ETA: Just saw this was a thread from last winter. My bad. Hope it helps

My kid did 6 years of CTY starting in 4th grade and loved it. He did put the summers that he attended during high school on his college application. For him it was not about showing summer rigor, it was about showing summer activities and CTY was his favorite one. We did not save the ACT score that he used to qualify.

Congrats to your daughter, even though this was a winter 2015 thread!
