7th grader- chances at a private academy???

Hi.

I want to know any suggestions, or programs that I can enroll to have a chance at a outstanding private academy. My choices:

Phillips Exeter
Phillips Andover
Deerfield
Lawrenceville
Hotchiss
Choate
Mildon

My Achievements:

I am a mostly A+ 7th grade student.

I got 1900's on my SAT's. I will most likely enroll in a SAT private tuturoing to raise my score to around 2200's. Planning to attend CTY.

I have been invited to JrNYLC. I plan to attend.

I currently take Adv. Algebra (will be transferred into PreCal in about a month) in school and I study Calculus outside of school. Considered top student in my grade by my teachers.

Went into northern NJ regional band and bergen county band for clarinet.

Proficient in an asian language, and very fluent in English (american born).

Any hooks or "prestigious-looking" things that I should enroll to, to help my chances of getting into one of my desired schools?

Get off of this site right now and go play videogames or something. Why stress yourself out??? This site is pretty much for high school juniors and seniors.

I don’t think those are colleges… He’s looking to go to a private highschool.

I’m trying to get into private highschools, not collleges. I want to know my chances and any suggesstions to improve my chances

it would be greaat if a person with your high abilities could start looking outside themselves and give back to teh community in some way through volunteering/raising awareness of issues etc…just a thought

yeah one thing you should focus on if you want an edge is turning yourself into an all-rounder. figure out what your interested in and start practicing and exhibiting that interest. example - im interested in engineering and have done numerous things to show that interest, both on paper and to anyone that knows me. You can do this through jobs/internships (it can be a bit hard to get these but if you know people you can get 1 - i got 1 at age 13 at a summer camp for example). Also, participating in school activities and extracurriculars - I’ve been leader of the tech crew and computer stuff at my school but I’ve also started our school’s first online radio. So take initiative as well.

You can also work on projects of your own. I’ve been working on my own company startup with guys I’ve met up with. Obviously it doesn’t have to be to this scale just yet - your in 7th grade but start thinking outside the spectrum of school and think how can you apply what you know and what you love.

Furthermore, you don’t have to do everything in one specific field. Be an all-rounder. play instruments, join bands, play in the school band, try some art class, etc. Community service is a major role - my school has a minimum of 10 hours a year but I’ve put it over 250 a year. It’s real easy to find and do - whether it be a local congressman, a temple/church/mosque, at school, or a special program to help those in need, it looks really good and helps impress admissions people.

Oh and check out EPGY and Keystone High School Online - they have courses starting now you can take that will be very useful from now till your latter high school years and will put you ahead of the game.

Good luck!

P.S: I’ve heard of Choate and know a few people that have gone there. Pretty large school but a prestigious boarding school. (Lots of hot girls there)

Thanks guys.

Fronz- thanks for the suggesstions. I am going to take the AMC 8 and 10. I took a previous test test and I got a perfect score. Hmmmmm… I’m starting to lean towards Choate.

I am taking an Algebra II course in the Acellus program- would that be an alternative to the EPGY program? I’m getting near perfect scores in there.

Thanks for all the help!

no problem. not sure about Acellus I was just reading some of it. However, if they offer the same credit and can give you some sort of transcript, etc it could be considered as an equivalent.

Definitely check into the two I suggested though - I highly recommend them. EPGY is through Stanford so you can’t go wrong there - also I think there are more course options through EPGY. I know my friend, who was very advanced in Physics and Math, took the entire Physics curriculum on EPGY in high school - he did AP through university level.

Anyways… I’m sure your more than qualified. Another thing to think about when your applying to high schools is more than just reputation. I had the option of going to reputable standardized public high schools in New York City (i.e Stuyvesant, Bronx Sci, Brooklyn Tech), but when it came down to it I ended up going to a small private high school in Long Island which proved to be much more flexible in keeping available every sport, course, extra curricular option for someone with the ambition to choose. Some of my friends who were great at basketball couldn’t even make JV teams while I was able to be on the Varsity Fencing team all 4 years and be captain 11th and 12th. You don’t have to listen to me - everyone’s different but its just something to think about from my experience.

It is great you are thinking so far ahead, just remember to not forget to have fun. Don’t let people tell you you are too serious. Anyways, I go to Thayer Academy, which is not even close academically to Philips Exeter or Andover, but I know people there. Ideally, you want to focus on an athletic endeavor. If you are very uncoordinated, run cross country or track. Honestly, all you need is to focus on training like you do in academics, and you could even be recruited for cross country or maybe even wrestling. If you can handle it, try to find a sport you can excell in.

PS: these schools are snobby so never forget you’re roots

Any hooks or “prestigious-looking” things that I should enroll to, to help my chances of getting into one of my desired schools?

This may get you into your private schools but you can forget about good colleges.

hmm for music I know in New York theres something called NYSSMA. Equivalent of all-state recognition. NYSSMA

Look for state/national recognition stuff.

Oh and something I was always considering was joining MENSA. If you think your IQ is high enough, it’s worth taking the test and joining for bragging rights lol.

Is there another all-state recogn. fr NJ? NJ All State (band/orchestra) is high school only. I checked out Mensa- theres an IQ test on tues. its 98%. I think I might be able to make it.

[Welcome to NJSMA.com](http://www.njsma.com/) looks like it might be it. But may I point out the New Jersey website looks sooo much crappier than New York’s haha :-P

You will get much better help on the prep school board here. The first thing they’ll tell you is to apply to a few that are not top tier if you really want to attend one. Especially if you need any sort of financial aid.

Go to public school.

Hey, Stop stressing yourself out. Don’t work too hard for a HIGH SCHOOL! Get a 4.0, do well on the Standardized tests, and be yourself. Just study and work hard. Be active in clubs, sports, and follow your passion. Do not do too much, because schools enjoy commitment, dedication, and passion. They want people, not robots. Sorry for being harsh, but its just high school. Do not do mensa to impress. Do it if you are curious about your IQ, that’s why I did it.

hes 12, maybe a mom like u should be doing sumething other than going on a site for young people
