Hello, if a 7th grader takes ACT, will the score be official and be viewed by colleges? I understand SAT score taken in high school is official. My daughter will take it to test water, but I don’t want colleges see it when she applies college in later years. Any input? Thank you!
Why waste the money and effort and take it officially? I suggest waiting, or if anything, take an ACT practice test.
Perhaps qualifying for a talent search? My kids took the SAT in 7th grade, and DD got some nice scholarships for summer studies in Ancient Greek and Mandarin as a result.
I don’t know about ACT, but SAT didn’t report the scores that my kids got in middle school.
I’ve heard of the SAT used in talent searches, but not the ACT. But I may be wrong on this.
But if her sole purpose of officially taking the SAT or ACT is just to “test waters,” I don’t really see much point.
Talent search SAT and ACT do not show up after child starts highschool. I have 2 children that did the 7th grade advanced testing and both reports are only available in my file at home.
ACT can be used to fulfill talent search criteria. You can request special approval to keep the scores on file but it’s not normally done. I’m sure a 7th grade who tests well will do better later. I wouldn’t bother at this point.
If the 7th grader is just trying it out, see if your school district has a summer review class/camp - for the SAT at least, they usually have a mock timed test included.
Yes, ACT is used by Duke TIP. Most parents choose the SAT because that is what they took. The math is easier on the SAT as well as since most 7th graders have not had much Algebra 1, it is a good choice for many. But advanced STEM students may do better on the ACT.
It’s pointless now to take it b/c they will be changing all of it next year. They already changes the state exams in our state & they’re giving out more EOC’s. Next year, SAT & ACT’s going to change.
@what2dowithlife: thank you for your info. I did not know ACT is going to change too!

Only a few changes are being made.
The ACT changes (which are not major changes to the test itself like SAT) began with the Feb 2015 test, so they are already in place.
As to the OP’s original question, colleges do not use tests taken in 8th grade or before to determine admission. Moroever, even for colleges that require you to provide the scores of all tests you have have taken when you apply for admission, that requirement does not apply to ACT or SAT tests taken in 8th grade or before.
I overheard girls usually do better for ACT according some stats. Is it true? Would it any disadvantage to only do ACT? or take both ACT and SAT for security.
It might be an advantage to take both because some students do better on one test vs. the other, but there’s no disadvantage to only taking one.
