8% acceptance rate this year?!

Hey hey, I just got my acceptance letter. It said there were more than 6,000 applications for 475 spots…figuring out to an 8% acceptance rate!

All I have to say is, wow.

There are 475 spots for the entering class, but they admit more than this because not everyone admitted will attend. I think I remember hearing that Bowdoin has around a 45-45% yield rate, so they probably accepted a little over 1000.

Congrats LaxGal08. I am fairly sure they accepted more than 8 per cent. Bowdoin accepts accepts more people then spots because the yield is not 100 per cent. I think the yield is around the mid 30s%.

475/.35= x/1
x = 1357ish students accepted

1360/6000= 22%

Thanks for pointing that out starbucksaddict/twowire. I wonder what would happen if more than expected chose to attend...

No great mystery here - The Bowdoin acceptance rate was 19% last year and will be about the same this year since the increase in number of applicants this year was small (about 1%).

Here's a story that summarizes the data for this year's first-year class:

First-year class most diverse yet

17% this year (exactly)

Interesting, where did you find this information?

I was told that by an adcom last week

Nice. I wonder if the low acceptance rate can be attributed to the fact that Bowdoin is expecting a higher yield (50ish per cent?) considering that they have eliminated loans.

I think that the final admission rate is yet to be determined. As I understand it, the percentage will rise if Bowdoin pulls people off the wait list. So it will stay at 17% only if Bowdoin has hit its numbers and doesn't go to the wait list. Last year, Bowdoin did go to the wait list but it's possible that the elimination of loans will push the yield rate higher than anticipated, resulting in little movement from the wait list to the admitted list . . .

Does anyone know how many people were waitlisted?

I'm waitlisted! It's not the best news, but considering the large pool of applicants this year, I'm glad. Even though it's not my first choice, I still liked how the Dean of Admissions commented on how impressed he was by my "thoughtful" application anyway...unless they say that to all waitlisted applicants.

18.435%
