I'm not a morning person and I had to sign up for an 8-8:55am chem1 class mwf because it was the only class left with a semi decent professor in the course. I'm not a morning person and ive had problems getting my lazy butt to 9am mwf classes this semster (not to mention it was a pe course) lol. But honestly, I need any advice to get motivated and change my ways! I have to take chem 1 now because I've still got a long line of upper level chems to complete! Thanks in advance.

*also, the chem 1 8am class is one I just signed up for to take in the fall. Sorry to make it seem like I’m taking it currently

I’m not a morning person either, but this semester I have an 8am and I had an 8am last semester.
So far what works best for me is making sure I actually get 8 hours of sleep the night before an 8am class (so I go to bed at 11 because I have to wake up at 7). When I get enough sleep, it’s a little easier to wake up. And once I’m up I force myself into autopilot so I get ready without thinking about it and don’t think about going back to bed until I’m already on my way to class.

Or you can just change your schedule to take the class at a later time with different professor. General chemistry is hardly an obscure subject and there’s tons of videos on youtube of various people teaching the material which you can watch if the professor at a later time is bad at teaching. If the professor writes hard tests don’t worry - they’ll be hard for everyone and the curve will compensate for that. The only problem I can see is that if the professor gives out lower grades - then you’ll have to deal with the 8 am class. I have an 8 am class right now and I get about 3 hours of sleep before the class. It’s not impossible to deal with. After I take a nap later in the day I feel normal.

I have English at 8. For me, it’s perfect because it requires little participating. I mean, how do you fail ENG 101? 1/3 of the points are from just showing up.

Are you good at chem? Do you know a lot about it? Does the prof take attendence at the beginning or end of class? Do you get points from showing up? Is it a lab? Consider those things, and you might be okay.

Ideally, you’d go to sleep a little earlier to make sure you get your 8 hours, but I know from experience that that sometimes isn’t possible. I have an 8 AM this semester, and my roommate (who is an unwanted replacement for my real roommate, who is on medical leave) stays up all night and sleeps all day. I get about 3 hours of sleep, if I’m lucky, the nights before my 8 AM because my roommate keeps me up. I’m a light sleeper, and I struggle to get to sleep when anyone has a light on or is making noise. It’s unbearable.

Thankfully, the semester is almost over, my real roommate is coming back in the fall, and I never have to deal with my current roommate ever again.

Basically, you’ll just have to muddle through the tiredness. If you can manage to get to sleep earlier, do so. If not, just make sure you set your alarm (or multiple alarms or a really, really loud alarm). If you like naps, try to fit in some on the days where you have to get up early. 8 AM’s are hard for many people, especially in college, especially when you live with a roommate, especially when you live in a dorm. I know. But it’s a fact of college life.

Just remember that the class is important, and remember that once you’ve passed that class, you never have to get up early for it again. It’ll be over and done with. And it’s just for one semester, not the rest of your life. You can make it–trust me.

Start your new schedule over the summer, at least 2-3 weeks before classes start. That way, you’re already used to it when classes start and you’ll be less exhausted the first few days.

Unless your professor gives quizzes or takes attendance, you can just attend a different lecture time.

Try to get in the habit of waking up earlier a few weeks before the start of the semester. I’m actually going to have a chem class at 8 am this fall too. I’m not much of a morning person either, but I’ve had 8am classes before, and you’ll get used to it. Getting to sleep earlier definitely helps…but I’m a night owl myself, and I never seem to get to bed before 1am at the earliest. It’s usually closer to 2 or so.

Coffee can be your best friend. I know it’s mine. My coffee pot has an automatic timer, and turns on about 15 minutes before I wake up…so…no waiting. I come into the kitchen and it’s right there waiting for me.

Now I just need to work on the robotic breakfast machine from Back to the Future…:)

Thank your lucky stars that you’re not a college athlete. 6 AM practices, anyone?

Haha, you guys are so awesome! And really funny! Thanks for the replys guys, now I’ve got some new ideas to try! I wish I could make coffee in the morning but I live on campus and coffee pots aren’t allowed:( also, the only coffee provided on campus is this really gross free church coffee. Ehh, maybe ill just make coffee runs in the morning. Haha and sg12909 I wish I was a college athlete! Too bad I suck at life and quit every new sport I try to pick up! I’m trying ultimate Frizbee now lol. I’m taking it as a pe class next semester, how badass is that?! And also, can’t take the 8am class at a diff time…I’m taking a chance and hoping its a good teacher because it was TBA when I signed up for it but there was also only a couple of spots left so I’m guessing its gonna be a good teacher. Either that or me and everyone and there grandmas who signed up for the class is gonna be screwed!! Haha also btw, reason I picked the tba is all the other teachers are literal ****…I haven’t taken a coll chem class yet and I sucked at in in hs so I can’t learn from some foreign teachers who dont know the material themselves. (Got this info from rate my prof and friends)
