I got an 8 on the SAT essay portion, but got a 750 on the writing section. I am not sure what was wrong with my essay. It is important to note that I didn't really write in my own "voice" like on the applications essays, but instead tried to throw in as many fancy SAT vocab words as I could. Will colleges see my essay score and question my application essay's validity?

Is 8 even bad? I only know the ACT and 8 is a solid essay score. Not great but not bad.

No, your SAT essay score will not call into the question the legitimacy of your personal statement.

For adults and anyone in the know, it’s widely understood how haphazardly the essay scores are treated. The point is, no one takes it that seriously and an 8 will certainly not be held against you.

Don’t worry! You can always improve the essay! I went from an 11 on the march date to a 12 on the June date for my essay score

No colleges don’t really look at your essay scores, they spend more time on the final writing scores and final scores.

yes… I got a 8 on my essay too and this was bothering me.My college essays are quite good but same here- whatever happened on the SAT essay.
Should I be worried?

I consider my strength to be English and writing, my AP Lang teacher loved me, but I got a 7 on the SAT essay. I felt pretty confident when I wrote it…but whatever. The essays are scores differently than an essay for English class would be scored. I’m going to practice a lot more with SAT prompts to be ready for my retake in the fall! If you’re happy with a 750 (you should be) you’ll be fine

Where are you applying, anyway?

My daughter got into 4/5 colleges she applied to (wait-listed at the fifth) with those scores.

I got an 8 on the ACT essay, and I think it was mostly because I don’t particularly like history or literature and they expect you to be able to pull random historical and literary examples out of the air. I can’t do this, so my examples were really generic and mostly from the real world and personal experience. I don’t think the score reflects the way I write when given time to revise.
Also, I don’t like that the ACT makes you write the essay after the rest of the test. At that point, you’re pretty much brain-dead.

Yeah, I got an 8 on the June one as well, which is reeeeeally weird because I felt like it was one of my best essays. On the other hand, I got a 10 on my October one and I thought it was average.

Maybe they graded harshly this time? I’m seeing a lot of 8’s…
