I'm planning on taking the Feb. ACT without writing and sending my current crappy score to my top college. I have an 8 on the essay and I want to know if top schools would look down upon an 8? It's certainly not something to be proud of but if I get a 30+ on the next ACT, would they look pass the 8?

Just take it with writing and try get better. Why not?

Besides, most top schools require writing and won't consider a test unless it has writing. So even if you send 2 scores, a crappy one with writing, and an amazing one without writing, they will only consider the one with writing.

depending on your school, some don't even look at the writing. You should first check to see if the school requires it. And if you got 30+, I don't think schools would mind too much that you got an 8 on the essay. A lot of schools these days don't consider standardized testing as the one and only thing to getting into their school. So don't worry too much. If you want to work on your essay, one thing that really helps is doing a quick little outline before your write, it literally takes 2 minutes.

IV. Example 3 (I don't normally write more than 3 body paragraphs)
V. Conclusion

Question for you: Was the 8 from the December ACT?

No, it was way back in June.
