Hi so I am a rising junior who will take the SAT in October. Right now I am in a dilemma. I am worried that my CR score will pull me down harshly. In practice tests, For math I usually get 780-800. For writing I usually get 770-800. Unfortunately my CR score is unstable. Sometimes I only get 670. Other times I get 750. I just can't seem to get my CR at an acceptable stable level. I really need to improve my CR or it will screw me up in October. So I ask you guys, what methods did you use to get a high score in CR? To me it feels like a crapshoot. Some articles are harder and some articles are easier. Any advise is great. Thanks in advance!

Just keep practicing. And dont skip ur vocab

I would like to know this as well. I’ve been getting low 700’s/high 600’s in CR. But honestly, I guess it all comes down to practice. The more passages you see, the more comfortable you will get while reading them. Aside from the obvious (don’t infer anything other than the info in the passage, etc), there’s really not that much left to do except memorize vocab and practice and learn from your mistakes.

For the CR on the SAT, vocabulary is very important. While practicing for the test is worthwhile, the best preparation is simply reading widely in a variety of formats – fiction, nonfiction, science, biography, etc. Those I’ve known who have gotten 800s have been voracious readers from young ages.

If you have access to Kaplan’s SAT 2400, I would suggest you get it and browse through the CR sections. I believe that in order to read and analyze at a higher level, you have to get exposure to harder passages. SAT 2400 takes you through exclusively difficult questions to try to get you thinking in the way the author is thinking. That’s essentially what it comes down to - on the SAT and in college. You have to realize the point of each paragraph and sentence placement to deduce why the author chose that specific arrangement of words to convey his/her points. Essentially, you just have to read a high level.

Also, vocabulary is a big part of it. I would suggest getting one of those SAT vocabulary lists to memorize vocabulary. These two things definitely helped me on my way to an 800! Good luck!
