Hi! Thanks for reading this post!
I made an 800 on my Writing section from my 12/2015 test. My other scores are good (670 M, 720 CR), but writing is definitely my sweet spot. One of the guidance counselors at my school told me that colleges really don’t care about the Writing section. I did some research and found that only about 1 in 300 students will make that score (I really didn’t think I was that good). Another counselor told me that it was just as good as an 800 on the CR.
One of my top colleges has an Ivy League-level Honors Program, but they say that they only look at Math and Critical Reading. Is that really true? If I submit my scores, won’t they have to at least see that I made an 800 on the Writing? Sorry if I sound dumb, but I’ve just heard so many pieces of conflicting information. Thanks again!
I hate to say it, but your first counselor is right. The old W is worthless for many colleges. That’s part of the reason why the SAT was redesigned. Now W is lumped in with CR. Probably to give it legitimacy.
But everything I’m mentioning is based on personal experience and what I’ve seen and read.
Keep in mind that there are colleges that value the old SAT W. Make sure you check with the colleges you’re interested in.
Good luck!
