Some top schools (MIT, Cornell, UChicago) don't consider the Writing portion of the SAT. Even schools that do probably weigh it a little less alongside CR and M. Do you think that an 800 Writing score is not as impressive or important in the eyes of an adcom as an 800 CR or 800 M? If so, why? If not, why not?

800 in W is awesome. If anything, it can only boost your application.

Thanks lol. I just can’t see it being weighed equally alongside M and CR - I mean, I know some CC’ers say that it is, but the subject matter seems to take a backseat to math and critical reading.

800 on Writing is rarer than 800 on CR or M.

Writing is the most predictive of the three sections with respect to college grades.

Among all schools that release detailed breakdowns of acceptance rates over various scores ranges, those with 800 on Writing are admitted at a higher rate than those with 800 on M or CR. E.g., Brown: [Brown Admission: Facts & Figures](<a href=“Undergraduate Admission | Brown University”>Undergraduate Admission | Brown University).

^ :)

Why then, silverturtle, do you think that a number of top colleges still don’t consider the Writing section?

^ Since the Writing section is still a fairly new section introduced in 2005, many colleges are still researching whether it is valid for college readiness. An 800 Writing score, however, can only benefit you in the admissions process. ;)

Some schools don’t want to rely on the College Board’s validity data, and it takes time to run their own analyses.

I really like this thread! I got 800W (twice), but didn’t think much of it because of the obsession with CR+M.

Argh, I’m the same way! I want an 800 in CR so bad lol. Highest I’ve scored yet on an official practice test was a 750 lol.

That’s logical, I suppose.

@descrescendo

I’d kill for a 750. I’m at 690 for CR, though I’m pretty content with my 770 Math. Retaking October for CR part of superscore

Haha. Actually, when I took the real thing last May, I got 690CR, 690M, 800W. Only on practice tests have I scored that high for CR. I’m hoping that 750 will be the case when I retake in December. :P

Oh hey, that’s exactly what I got on my March one! (the 770M was from December)

Good luck on December! 750 is my goal as well, though I’d be happy with any improvement at all.

My goal as well. 750CR + 750M + 800W = 2300 Composite = 1 step closer to Yale. Lol.

Best of luck to you!

Best of luck y’all! Decrescendo, you got a very doable goal, I wish you the best! Taking SAT on October 9th?
I don’t have any extreme scores, like you do. I’m scoring about ~750 in CR,W and M.
Honestly, I think only math is the one where I can get an 800. CR and W are a little unpredictable! I always a miss one or two questions in CR. :|

You can do it. If it makes you guys feel any better, we’re all in the 98th/99th percentile of all high schoolers in the nation. :D

What matters is that a 800 score might not bolster you, but it will certainly not harm you either. On the other hand, out of the 99 colleges you are interested in, even if one considers the Writing section on equal footing with CR and Maths, then it’s your loss.

So, don’t take any risks. Devote time and effort to this section too. Work hard on it too. And the scoring rubric is such that a great essay can still get you a 800 despite getting a couple of MCQs wrong. The vice-versa holds true as well.

any 800 is a good 800! it certainly won’t hurt you!

In hindsight, I probably should have paid a bit more attention on the essay when I took my SAT this past year (3 times). I never scored higher than a 9 on the essay lol. On the second sitting I got an 8 essay but 0 MC wrong giving me a 770. I was sooo ****ed as you can imagine. But anyways, I think over 750 W is above par for most colleges since not many people do that well in the section anyway. As for reading…good luck on that one haha. It took me a while to perfect it and finally get an 800 CR in June. I did like 10 sections a day it made my head go crazy.

Lol, that’s intense. I bought Direct Hits for the vocab and took 10 official practice tests. Aside from that, I haven’t done much. Maybe I should? :P
