800's and 300.. chance?

Hi

Could you tell me what are his chances?

Chinese - came to U.S in junior year.

GPA: 3.9 (most likely UW)
SATI: <1400
SAT II Bio: 790
Chem: 800
Physics: 800
Chinese: 800
Math IIC: 800
Writing: 380

Physics B: 5
Physics C: 3
Calculus AB: 5
School offers 6AP's (1 foreign language)

EC: awards on schoolwide competitions, some outside competitions
president for several clubs. generally, decent ECs.

He's an ultra URM...but he isn't eligible for UC in normal process(doesn't meet a-g req's) or through exams alone (SAT <1400). He's applying for Stanford and some other top schools.

Obviously, he is smart, but his English skills aren't up to usual standard. How do the colleges treat a case like his?

Thankx!

he's got to learn english asap, im at a loss for any other way, but that will come with time. as long as he's applying for engineering and not comparative literature lol he should be fine...as long as he can show them he plans to master english quickly

What was the breakdown of his SAT score? Has he taken the TOEFL? If not, he probably should - that might be a way around the low SAT II writing score (and a similarly low veral SAT score)

The UC's place a VERY high emphasis on that SAT II writing score. It's going to hurt, but a good TOEFL score combined with those other SAT II scores might balance things out.

yeah saying his SAT is under 1400 is like saying i have less money than bill gates.

I'd make a guess that the SAT I score is around 800 Math and maybe 400 Verbal, so I'm thinking 1200 for that guy.

He should read a book

reading A book isnt gonna do much, for someone telling others that they shouldnt post idiotic question u shouldnt be posting idiot answers

I agree, he should read a book. Look I know many people who have never been in US, UK, Australia or any other country where people normally speaks english, and have score in writing and verbal much above 500 [even a bit above 700]. Actually it is majority...

Since when are Chinese URMs?

The Chinese are overrepresented at colleges. They should have less asians at top colleges, they are taking spots from whites.

lol thats awsome!! i love that. yeah he should take the TOFEL and that would pretty much disregard his low writing score

he needs to bring up his writing mark and english skills or he wont be accepted. He wont be ale to learn anything a the US universities because they teach in English, no matter how smart he is.

The Chinese are overrepresented at colleges. They should have less asians at top colleges, they are taking spots from whites....

i take offense to that, maybe the asians in these top colleges are truly more qualified...? how about that...?

thanx for all the sincere replies!

i don't get why this person didnt take the toefl. all these people whose language isnt english are taking SATs and wondering why their verbal and writing scores aren't good. don't let your friend do himself/herself a disservice.

I am black....

um... that was sort of random...

yeah... asians should go back to their homeland. Asians should try help strengthen their OWN country instead of helping out foreign nations like the US.... LOL j/k i'm korean btw so don't flame.

there is no correlation between knowing a language fluently and doing better than 300 on your verbal SAT, i promise.

and there is no correlation between knowing a language fluently and reading, especially for foreign students, i promise that too.

somehow i managed a 660 on the SAT in 8th grade after living in the USA for a year, and trust me, books had a huge role in that

660 on the SAT? Ouch. I think you mean 660 on Verbal. Lol.
