Problem is I saw that 83% of those admitted are in the top 5%...
I am in a very large class of 617 people and am 31... one spot outside the technical "top 5%...
I am in the top 5.02% of the class.... do you think that I will be considered a top 5% applicant?
I just don't want to not get in because I don't hit the magic number..</p>
<p>Relax. There’s no magic test score, class rank, GPA, or any other number. I see no difference between 5 and 5.02. You are not going to not get in for not hitting a magic number, since no such thing exists. Admission officers will look at your entire application, not just a few numbers, to make their decision.</p>

<p>Also note: these stats refer to last year’s class, not this year’s; there is no promise that ALL students in the top 5% get in; and, obviously some people who are not in the top 5% get in.</p>
<p>But you are right that for many people Rice is the coolest place imaginable.</p>

<p>Rice’s admissions process is truly holistic. I didn’t really understand this until I got here. If you see some stat about our students that really intimidates you, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. As long as you are within an average range you will be more than fine.</p>
<p>I agree with the others. There is no magic number in the admissions process. I’m at Rice and my high school didn’t rank at all.</p>

<p>While I agree with the other posts, I do understand your concern. My son made it into the top 5%, by two people.</p>
<p>If you get here you will soon get to visit another part of the bell curve that was previously unknown.</p>
<p>No worries. I was not even in the top 10% of my high school. My SAT and extracurriculars as well as my actual grades made up for it. Like other people have said, there is no magic formula.</p>

It’s interesting that the top 5% proportion dropped last year (from 83% to 74%).
(If I remember the old scores correctly) the ACT range stayed the same: 31-34
SATs are 1410 - 1540</p>
