8th grader wondering if my scores are okay...

i got a 570math, a 480verbal, and a 490 writting... i got a 7 essay... is that okay for an eight grader??

That's like taking driving lessons at 8 years old. Why?

Your scores can't be compared to those of a 15 or 16 year old taking the SAT.

i took it so that i could apply to a john hopkins summer program

entirely fine, especially if you didn't intensively study for it.

For example, I took the old SAT in 7th grade and scored 660M, 590V (1250 total)

I retook in 10th grade and scored 800M 710V (1510 total), an increase of 260 points. I didn't bother retaking after that. Your score will probably increase somewhat as well.

So I would not be really concerned. Especially since the math has gotten harder (so you need to have more courses behind you) and you don't learn how to write "real" essays until high school anyway. And you can take it in 12th grade and have an extra year to prep over what I had.

Ivy girl
you still have 3 years to thin about that. forget about it

Ha. Anyone else used to think they were really weird before they joined CC?

i got a 690 in math and 590 in verbal back when i was your age. then i got a 710 in math and 750 in verbal junior year. you are fine...and stay away from this site..it is too addicting...leave now while you can.

I never even heard of the SAT in 8th grade. Take it for what its worth...but you scored better than about 98% of my senior class...but my highschool wasn't a very good one either.

I think you just missed the cut off (based on the old data M&V) for the Johns Hopkins Program. :( But I'm not sure. I think for 8th grade CTY was a combined 1060 and 7th grade a 1040, but i'm not 100% positive.

10char10char

ivygirl- ivy league schools are bad go somewhere else ;)

I took the SAT in seventh grade too for the Johns Hopkins CTY summer program...lots of kids do..normal ones too lol. i got 520 math and 450 verbal.

CTY is hella fun, at least I thought, as long as you didn't get stuck with a boring class like math or writing or a sucky instructor.

But worrying about 8th grade SAT scores is utter crap. Studying (with prac tests) nets about 200-300 points. Do well in school, get a life, and eff thinking about colleges + SAT.

that's pretty good as long as you keep improving. i got those scores in 9th grade psats. so you're pretty well off.

You might've been at like the borderline of the cutoff, but I think you did fine for a 8th grader. I'm sure you probably qualified for the DUKE TIP program.
I took the SATs in 7th grade and got an 1120 for TIP, but I ended up going to CTY. It was awesome, but I had like the second lowest score out of all the girls in my hall. Still, it was a great experience.

yes they are okay dude now go play in the sand or something

low 500s are the nationwide average for high school juniors. That means you're a little bit below where the average high school junior is. If that pleases you, great, but its really your decision whether or not they're satisfactory.

It really depends whether or not you studied, and what your standards are (I’m assuming they are high based on your username). My 7th grade SAT scores 690M and 610V, and two months later I took the new SAT (courtesy of Duke) and received 790M, 550V, and 590W. Keep in mind, however, that I spent half a year preparing beforehand, so that factors into my score. You’ll also find that as time passes your score should naturally go up because of schooling. I took a practice SAT recently, which is a little more than a year later (I’m a freshman next year), this time without as beforehand study, and my verbal score surprisingly went up about 100 points. You will probably experience the same results a year from now so don’t fret about your current score; you’ve got plenty of time :)

I'm in 8th grade too...i got 570 math, 550 writing, 530 verbal (& a 7 on the essay too.) I didn't study though, and idk if you did. most of my friends got like in the 1300's and 1400's without studying, and youre obviously above that...i think its very good for an 8th grader without studying, and it would still be "ok for an 8th grader" even if you did study a little bit =)

Can the 8th graders just come back a bit later? Everyone here who has took the June SAT is nervous like hell but the 8th graders are goofing around and asking if their results are okay or not. I just want to say: if you have something to compare with, like the harvard acceptees' 8th grade SAT average, then why don't you just go ahead to evaluate your chances?
