9 am classes on West Bank?

How bad do you think that will be? I want to take a philosophy and poli-sci class that would mean that I have 9 am classes M-F, and I am going to be living in the super block.

I live in California so I don't know how bad the weather is in the morning and if it'll be difficult getting to class? Thanks!

It will not be difficult if you’re on the SB (East Bank). Just wake up early and take a campus connector (comes every 5 mins) or walk across the Washington Avenue Bridge. In my opinion, I love having classes scattered across campus. Have fun!

Thank you so much! does the campus connector come right in front of the superblock, and how long does it take to get to the west bank from there?

I have no clue, but I do not think it comes around the SB because of the construction, but there are many close stops around campus. The ride would take a few minutes, with some delay (i.e. traffic, make stops…) I would just walk the bridge since construction is a big mess. During the Winter, you can go inside and stay warm, sorta :)

Wow, thank you so much. I really appreciate it!

The campus connector would not be the best option, since the only place it stops on East Bank (due to construction) is Eddy/Jones which is totally out of the way if you’re going from superblock to West Bank. The walk isn’t that far, but you’re walking West and therefore against the wind, which will be gross in the winter. I’ve seen “campus shuttles” by the superblock before, which are smaller busses that I think take people from the superblock area to more central areas but I’m not totally sure how that works.

Okay thanks a ton. Would you say that Minneapolis would be colder fall or spring semester?

I’m from Texas so I can definitely relate to being worried about the cold haha. In general I believe Spring semester is colder. It’s nice (60’s+) in September and October, November is 40’s and 50’s and rainy, then in gets cold until about March. This last year (my first year) however it warmed up in February and didn’t get cold again so apparently the seasons are unpredictable.

Okay, thanks for the heads up. Should I invest in rain or snow boots? Does it get difficult to get to class, or want to get to class, on cold days?

Rain/snow boots are def unnecessary. Maintenance seemed to do a great job getting snow off the sidewalks and walkways. For the coldest days, a decent jacket (North Face and Patagonia are the most popular kinds), gloves, and a hat are all you need. I’m not a girl, but I noticed a lot of girls going totally nuts with Ugg boots/tights/leggings/spandex/scarves, but I wouldn’t invest in such until -30 degrees is in the forecast. Because let’s be honest anyways, that crap looks ridiculous. I never particularly ** wanted ** to wake up for class regardless of the weather, but the cold certainly doesn’t make it any more desireable to get out of bed. You get used to it with time. I lived on Saint Paul campus my freshman year, and spring semester I had an 8:10 MWF class on Minneapolis’s West Bank. Come February/March, I kind of stopped going 2/3 of the time because that commute was just a pain in the ass in the cold.

That’s what I’m concerned about… for fall, I’m just going to start off with classes only on the East bank but I am taking two 9 am classes on the west bank in the spring, and between those two classes, I’ll be across the river every day, and I don’t know how that would be like in the winter.

Do you know when construction is supposed to be over? Also, how did you get from the MSP airport to campus during breaks and stuff? Sorry I’m bombarding you with so many questions haha, and thank you for the wardrobe advice!

Hey no problem! I’m on my iPhone so I can’t give the most thorough info, but as far as construction goes, it’s going to be done in 2014. They say the worst of it will be over at the end of 2012. And getting to/from the airport is easy. From campus, hop on either the 3, 16, 50, or 50U busses into Downtown and get off at Downtown East (The Metrodome). It’s like a 5 minute bus ride. There’s a light-rail station platform right next to the bus stop you get off at. Hop on the southbound lightrail, and it’s like a solid half hour ride to the airport. It’s the same old song and dance going from airport to campus, only in reverse. Also bus and lightrail are free with your UPass.

I had 8:15 class on West Bank. Not a problem, and I got good at timing the walk exactly.

I don’t understand why people whine so much about the cold. The buildings aren’t that far apart…you’re not going to get hypothermia unless you try to walk to St. Paul or something. Just be sure to buy good gloves (or better, mittens) and a warm hat to protect your extremities.

If you are from a warm area like Texas or Georgia, consider waiting to shop for winter gear until you arrive in Minnesota. It’s easy to make a trip to Target or the Mall of America and the selection will be better than at home.

Thanks guys, also one last question. Is it possible to get from Anderson Hall on the West Bank to Nicholson Hall on East Bank in 15 minutes? I don’t know if that’d be stressful or not.

^ That won’t be a problem. If you don’t get stuck walking behind slow people on the bridge, it’ll take 10-12 minutes maximum.
