I visited Exeter last month and after my interview my parents talked privately with my interviewer. I don't know if it's true but this is what they said she said regarding SSAT scores, "You pretty much need %90+ in every category to be accepted, an %85 is acceptable."
I obviously disagree because the interviewer told me they wanted students that would contribute to their community. I got %60 in the Vocab section of the SSAT but high 80's overall. Do I still have a chance of getting in (depending on my Rec's, EC's, and essays) or is all hope lost?

It sounds as if she has a "dichotomy" of scores needed. Having a higher score surely helps but NO way their mean can be around a 92 and all acceptances receive higher than 90. If she means you will automatically be accepted with all >90 she is wrong she is also wrong if she means that you HAVE to have a 90 to get accepted.

Was there a misunderstanding anywhere along the way because I do not exactly understand how the mean SSAT would be so low (relative to the fact that she said "need") if this was the case.

Having a 60 verbal will surely not help but I do not believe all hope is lost. At this point your English recommendation will likely be more important (verbal IS the place where you messed up).

what do you mean? I didn't say the mean in there.

I know the mean though.

oh, wait are you talking about the mean of applicants or people that are accepted? Either way what is it?

I am talking about the mean of the students of the school.

what is it?

I just answered your question. I am not sure what you are asking...

The mean of accepted applicants in 2008 was 92th percentile, right? I found that somewhere on a post. I think that's what DEtrombone asked? .. (Principalviola said that in the above post, too)

o yea srry didn't catch that the 1st time

Everyone makes mistakes :)

& i highly doubt that exeter's mean would be 92 if a 90+ was required in each category. also.. that 60 is done and done, so don't worry about it! if you don't get in, there's always next year. that 60 won't help you but if you shine in your essays, ECs, & interview, i'm sure you still have a chance!

besides.. vocabulary is pretty easy (in my opinion) to improve, so if there IS a next time (hopefully not), just memorize, memorize, memorize! i bombed reading comprehension and i'm pretty lost on how to improve for that, so.. i'm just reading. tons and tons, haha.

best of luck! (oh, and quit worrying. that won't help anything xD)

haha ok will do

remember lots of students are accepted with 97 98 99. Therefore students in 80's are still fine.
