92% from the top 10%?

Yes Haverford is not Williams. It is better in a lot of its own ways. Williams is tops in many minds but not for everyone. They have their own challenges. Leave it at that.

Back to the topic that was asked.

My take is this has a value or is indicator to them of a meaningful characteristic. it is part of that equation some schools really value versus others, we are so often asked here on CC to divine for families.

So I looked at the Boston College fact book. And I recall it was 80+ percent where top 10 percent of their class. Considering the big time sports recruits in the mix, I thought it was a big number.

So perhaps that has more weight for certain schools as indicator of something they believe offers some view into the application of what works at their school, to determine their best class. Or who will be successful there.

It was insightful for me as we look at profiles and questions from posters asking for a sense of their application to school x or y.

As a example for nuanced view of things, the top 10 and 4.0 unweighted with a lot of APs with the 1450 is better opportunity for Haverford or BC, perhaps. Versus the 1540 outside the top 10 with the 3.7. Ecs essay recs and rigor all being equal of course.

Haverford is probably the school that has impressed me the most over the past three years of visiting 21 colleges and universities from Maine to Philly and all points inbetween.

The Haverford ain’t Williams line is a direct quote from the OP’s original post.

Your first paragraph pretty much reiterates the point I was making.

@privatebanker I didn’t mean to suggest that Williams was a superior institution to Haverford in any way. I’m sorry if I came off that way. The point that I was trying to make is that Williams is “tops,” as you say, in the minds of those who haven’t done sufficient LAC research to consider Haverford.

Your reasoning regarding academic preferences makes sense, although I’ll have to ask my 3.7/35 friend how the hell he got into BC, haha. Upon looking more closely at Haverford’s CDS, I noticed that they weight academic GPA and ECs as “Very Important,” while test scores are only “Important.” This supports your views. Incidentally, I think my chances are Haverford are somewhat lower in light of this information, as I fall into the low-GPA high-ACT category.
