I'm a bit confused about unweighted GPA scaling. I've heard that anything above a 96 average translates to a 4.0, but then a friend (who goes to my school) said her 96/100 GPA was calculated to be a 3.75.
My own unweighted GPA on a 100-point scale is around a 96. Is this really a 3.75, which is pretty low for the schools I'm applying to? Is it higher? Should I just sit back, relax, and let the colleges recalculate my GPA using their own scales?
I'd appreciate any insight. Thanks!

The GPA thing is confusing, but I’m pretty sure by most standards you have a 4.0, because I know that a 96 GPA could get you into an Ivy League school if other aspects of your application are good, while a 3.75 GPA could not. Good luck and don’t worry!

Unsupported statistics are inherently confusing.

If your 96 is an overall average, you might have 3 grades of 99 and 1 grade of 87. Thus, this would translate to 3.75 (3 A’s and 1 B).

However, if you have an average of 96 IN EVERY CLASS, then you would obviously have straight A’s and a 4.0 average.

The way adcoms typically calculate your GPA is by assigned a letter grade to each class (A = 4, B = 3, etc.), then averaging these grades.

@ rmldad - I’ve never received an average less than a 90 (in other words, I’ve never received a B). Does this make a difference? Thanks for your help!

Yes, that means that you have a 4.0, or at least very close, if you account for A-minuses.

For those of y’all who haven’t read A for Admissions (Go read it now! It’s much more accurate than CC), your GPA only goes into your Academic Index if rank is not available. If rank is available, then it doesn’t really have much value, since it’s already factored in. AdComs prefer to use rank because then it shows how well you did in the context of your school, so they don’t have to go around speculating whether a 96 at your school is equivalent to a 4.0 or 3.75 at another school.

Ahhhh, I see. I did read “A for Admission” about 3 years ago - hence why I don’t remember that particular section, LOL. Thanks again. I’m in the top 6% (possibly 5% after new calculations) of my class, so hopefully it’ll all work out.

if you’ve never gotten a B then you have a 4.00(assuming A-=A). Congratulations!! I’m jealous :P

Are you sure a 90 is an A? It’s a B at our local HS (cutoff for an A is at 93).
