A 34 on the ACT Assessment?

Is it possible for a first-timer? I never took the ACT before.

Are there any books worth ordering? Real ACT by ACT? How to prepare for the ACT by Barrons? How to crack the ACT?

Thanks guys. . .

I mean... it's possible. You just have to do well. I took the ACT after one practice test and got a 35, sophomore year. I think that for the ACT it's important to review some of the math concepts they have that are a touch more advanced than the SAT's.

Can't help you out, books-wise...

I also got a 35 my first (and last) time.

Great Scores guys - I ain't really sure if I can get it without preparation. . I do have a practice test from the registeration packet. . If that will suffice then I'll move on.

It's very possible.

I got a 34 my first time and a 35 my second.
Didn't study for either one :)

You guys are the super-uber model students.

I, on the other hand, am afraid I'm not one.

So an advice or a great book can help me. Thanks!

Try The Real ACT Prep Guide by the ACT testmakers, since it's got real tests.

I think the ACT is much harder than the SAT, but a high score on it doesn't impress people like the SAT does.

I think if you do well in your English and math classes that you won't need to study; classroom work should be enough. For example, my sophomore year I took it and got a 32. A year later, after doing nothing but learning in school, I got a 34 (should have been a 35...curse you, Science!). But if you want practice, do some tests. I imagine Real ACT would be perfect for that.

i'm aiming for a 34....and from what was mentioned on the thread....i, unfortunately, go to a really really really crappy school....the best we had was 33...and the guy that got it threw away his life (if he had one to start with) to get it. i need a 34...not becuz i want to beat him (well...partly because of that)...but test scores are the only weak spot in my application, i think. did anyone actually have to prep for a 34...if so..how? cuz i feel dumb right now...

As I said before, just randomly studying won't really help much. Take, just pulling a random number, 3 practice ACTs and see where you generally score low. Then find materials and problems to boost your skills in that area.

ACT doesn't mark off points for wrong answers like the SAT does. I personally found it to be an easier test. Preperation can be useful too. I would recommend going to your local library to get mulimedia test-prep stuff, or books if you'd rather. I used a Kaplan CD-ROM from the library.

I used Princeton Review's ACT guide (it wasn't the complete, in-depth version, but one of those "Crash Course" books that gives basic hints and advice). I found it to be very helpful, especially the science section. I scored a 34, so I was pretty happy. I'd recommend that book.

This site has a lot of high acheivers. If you are looking at odds, understand that usually less than 0.5% of test takers score 34 or above.

.5% doesn't have to be daunting though. thats 1 in 200, now think about how many people take the ACT...it's possible and a very realistic hope/goal (maybe not expectation)

I think the ACT is a lot easier than the SAT.

mine have steadiliy increased (i'm a junior btw)
27 (dec. 02); 30 (oct 03); 31 (dec 03); 33 (oct 04)
Am i taking this way too many times?
HOW do you get a 35 on your frist try? that is daunting and amazing

jesus, I got a 1480 on the sat and my act was only a 27

=-0

i feel like for the ACT's the time constraint is more noticeable. Also, i feel like the science section is quite random. I'd get anywhere between 25's to 33's in the science section for the 4 tests I've taken, and It certainly didn't just climb up...very random indeed

the science sections are awful, I've taken AP Physics (not taken exam yet), AP Chemistry (5 on exam), AP Biology (5 on exam) and ive taken SAT II Chemistry 770 and only got a 26 for the science portion of the ACT, complete BS
