A 4 recs a little much??

2 Teachers
1 Adult from a Community Service Orgamization (State Board = can comment on my leadership)
1 Adult from my internship mentor (comment on my creative abilities in the workplace)

All of those are from different areas, so that works right? If I could, I would cut my teacher recs to 1, but I know it's required to have 2 >___>

radronOmega,

That could work. See if you can nudge your supplemental recommendors into concrete examples / vignettes that give the reader a true picture of you - far more interesting to read than a litany (however true) of your wonderfulness.

OniLawliet -
I think that if you include a supplemental arts portfoloi, the arts teacher rec might be appropriate.

I plan on including a disc with my application that has my artwork on it, so I'd be using my art teacher's rec as a supplement to that.

I just figured if the common app wants a fine arts rec, then why not give Chicago the same rec?

We'll see what happens. I've already asked her, and she was honored to help.

Very cool. Best wishes to you, OniLawliet.

My son is also going with four recs for Chicago. Each one has its purpose. Chicago specifically asks for recs from math/science and social studies/English teachers. I can understand why Chicago specifies recs from these teachers. If students have poor math/science ability and writing/analytical skills, they really are not going to be able to handle the work at Chicago (where they have to take an array of core classes) . I am surprised that more schools don't specify that recs have to come from these two teachers.
My son chose two supplemental recommenders because he felt strongly that they could talk about important aspects of who he is. These two people saw different sides of him that would not have been apparent to the science/English teachers.
Every applicant is unique. In some cases, more information is warranted and the reader might welcome it to get a better picture of who the applicant is.

At the end of the day, look at your application in totality and see what it is saying about you. Use your good judgment, and then be at peace with yourself.

Sorry, I see that you have plenty of helpful advice already, but I was just wondering, where is this fine arts supplement on the common app that you speak of?

The fine arts supplement is in the new common app for 07-08 year...

<a href="https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/DownloadForms.aspx%5B/url%5D">https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/DownloadForms.aspx</a></p>

They added a Arts and Athletics supplements to the common app this year so students with dedicated interests in those areas can show their accomplishments to the schools they apply to and emphasize their interests in the area.
