Hi, my son won an award in 8th grade.
Should he put this on his transcript??
It was a Scholastic arts and writing award if that means anything.

Nope…leave it off. D’s included CTY, which extended from 7th grade into high school, but usually something like this award would not be included.

Unless it’s something like getting Eagle Scout (which is cool because that means he did it really quickly on top of being an impressive thing in and of itself), I wouldn’t list it. I would say maybe if it’s state-level or above, but other than that, no.

^Eagle Scout, wouldn’t that be done in HS?

^^^
Not necessarily. I know several boys who worked extra hard to get their Eagle Scout done before HS.

If it’s a fairly prestigious award (National Mathcounts, National Spelling Bee, Eagle Scout…), then I would advise you to put that in the Additional Info. section. Other than that, you should probably leave it off since the honors section specifically states 9th grade or above.

Yeah my dad got his when he was 13.

It’s Girl Scouts that have an age-requirement on their Gold Award, I believe.

No, universities don’t ask for 8th grade awards etc…

@ OP: Who was he competing against? Don’t some Scholastic Awards have people competing from 7-12 grade? Someone please clarify!!! ;)

For CTY do you mean State Award? I got that in 7th and then in 8th grade. Is this something you list? Is it an academic award or “additional info”.

I know I’ve asked this before, but I haven’t received an answer so I’m going to ask again. I got a perfect score on the National Latin Exam in 8th grade. In a sense I was competing with high schoolers because everyone at the same level of Latin takes the same test, regardless of grade level. Can I put it on my app?

@112358: I think that would be fine (I honeslty would do it), as you were competing against high schoolers because you were on the same level as them. What have you done to improve/utilize your Latin skills, as in an EC or excelling at a higher level since 8th grade? Sorry, I haven’t read your prior posts, so I’m not sure what you’ve done since.

You should have probably made that a new thread.

I took two more years of Latin in 9th and 10th grade (but did not have the opportunity to take the NLE) and I still read Latin now and then in my spare time. That’s not really something I can list as an EC, though. I did get an 800 on the SAT II, so that should show my proficiency.
